Lord Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Well - Karthik is not a specialist opener. That is the point. If this guy is not a specialist opener then you can have another guy as an opener. Kohli can fit the bill there. He is being trusted to walk in at No.3. Opening is not a big step from there. hes not looking great in MO,what chances r of him succeeding against the new ball
Sooda Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 That article is a good read and essentially says that DK should be given a middle order slot, he cannnot do any worse than Rohit right now. Moreoever he needs a longish run in the side at 4 or 5. Its his versatility that makes him a must for the ODI squad, backup keeper, opener, middle order bat rolled into one. And he has proven, as Sane says, that he is a pretty good bat. They should, as Vortex says, have a specialist opener up there- Vijay or possibly Mukund as Vijay has not exactly covered himself in glory in his ODI career thus far

Even as a makeshift opener he has done well for us in Tests. Problem is not that. Problem is his poor conversions. You need to score 100s.Even if he manages to score 50 or 60 every other innings it is still not enough. He gotta make it count in a big way like Gauti always does. He scored a 150 against SL in SL. Something like that.

thevortex Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 hes not looking great in MO' date='what chances r of him succeeding against the new ball[/quote'] Are you not agreeing with me then? :) I am all for giving him a break. Karthik, that is. If you are talking about Kohli, then the case is that when all other things are equal (read runs) then why not go with the specialist batsman - that too a youngster? Makes more sense any which way you see it. Or are you saying that Karthik is a better batsman than Kohli? Because that is the only thing being discussed here. Not Karthik's keeping abilities.

Something like that. Yes indeed. And his problem is with his temperament. Not necessarily technique. Even when keeping he would convert fantastic opportunities into catches. But drop the easiest ones or fluff the easiest stumpings. He is that kind of a character. He needs to improve his consistency at the highest level. No matter how talented he is.

I was talking about Kohli. Kohli is a specialist MO player, not an opener,so no it doesnt make sense to replace a makeshift opener with another makeshift opener on the basis of 2 innings(2 were wrong decisions) Karthik may not be a better batsman, but certainly more capable of utilising the PPs by going over the top.
The Dark Horse Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 . His current six-game run as opener, after flying in as Sehwag's replacement during the Asia Cup, equals his longest spell at a fixed batting slot. lol..poor guy, but he shouldnt complain-thats the way it goes..There are some who dont even get these chances.
vvvslaxman Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 lol..poor guy' date=' but he shouldnt complain-thats the way it goes..There are some who dont even get these chances.[/quote'] Despite some disagree about where he should bat, ironically the very reason he is still playing as a specialist batsman in the side is because of his willingess to be flexible. Moment he compromises on flexibility he will find himself out of the side like the rest.

Sehwag was a Middle order batsman before he became what he is! For that matter, Karthik too is the same. He still bats in the middle order for his state side - as you so rightly point out his stellar domestic record! So, I am not sure that that can be used as a reason. We just dont have specialist opening batsmen in our squad right now. So the question boils down to - can Karthik be allowed to keep out Rohit or Kohli? Especially when he will NOT keep? I will not even get into how you make out that there were 2 wrong decisions. That caught behind did not show anything on the replays. But that alone does not mean that he was not out.

We just dont have specialist opening batsmen in our squad right now. So the question boils down to - can Karthik be allowed to keep out Rohit or Kohli? Especially when he will NOT keep? why not?if Dhoni feels that Karthik is more likely to utilise the PPs more than Rohit n Kohli,so be it.n Karthik did score runs at the top in Asia Cup wen both Rohit n Kohli were in MO. see Karthik is more of a batsman/keeper rather than a keeper/batsman.his first job is batting IMO. I will not even get into how you make out that there were 2 wrong decisions. That caught behind did not show anything on the replays. But that alone does not mean that he was not out. ofcourse it does, how else do u make out.there was clear daylight b/w bat n ball there. n in game against NZ u could see it was headed down leg even with the naked eye
