Guys, I am going to NY/NJ in couple of weeks and need your input on easy way to go around and visit places in NY. Bascially I am flying to Philly, renting a car, visit places, and then going to NJ.. but from NJ, I am thinking of taking bus or train to NY downtown and other places.. anyone recommend any mode of transportation from NJ to NY? Its going to be expensive to rent a care and stay in NY .. so I am just planning on to go back and forth couple of days to NY.. Ohhh.. and Jai Maharashtra..

B/w NJ and NY - NJ transit (train..).. Its frequent, quick and pretty cheap and will take you straight to NY Penn station. From there, its just a matter catching the subway and getting where you want. One tip about sight-seeing NY - make sure you spend an hour the previous day figuring out your subway/train routes. Its actually pretty hard to go there and THEN start figuring out whats what.

so you gotta do a train change to get to other places from penn state?
NJ to penn-station in Manhattan is NJ-transit, which is your regular transit train. Within NYC, you go around on subway/metro, which is the (mostly) rapid underground train.

Wot others said..take the NJ transit to NY Penn station. On your first day do this: 1. Empire State Building 2. Rockefeller Center 3. Times Square (Do this at night time) 4. World Trade Center Memorial / Wall Street 5. Central Park & Metropolitan Museum of Art (if you have time :P) On second day: 1. Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Some of the major tourist spots are walking distance from Penn station. I took the double decker bus for sight seeing, which is a hop on and hop off bus and costs about $25 for the whole day. This open air bus basically makes a circle from Central Park to downtown Manhattan and you can get off at various spots...worth it in my opinion if you want to cover most of the attractions in one day. Hell..if you have time..just walk around and soak in the atmosphere of the different neighborhoods in Manhattan. There's a lot to do and see in the city that never sleeps. Have fun :two_thumbs_up:

If you wanna travel from Nj or any other place by bus, Greyhound bus is perhaps pretty good. If by train, get Amtrak, would be little costly though. The early you book, the better deal you get. Within NY/NJ, the NY train is the best way to travel. If coming to DC area, same applies, Amtrak or Bus. Both pretty convenient. From 7th Avenue, Buses rune every hour to DC.

Two days should be fine.. But as the others said, you'll have spend half a day just to see the statue. I am guessing you'll be there for the Labor day weekend. So, the crowds will be even bigger. The earlier you can start the day to see the statue, the better. But while you're at Philadelphia, make sure you visit the historic district around 10th and Market. You can find some of the most significant pieces of legislations/proclamations/monuments, like the place where the original declaration of Independence, the first US supreme court, in this 3 block radius. There's not a lot of places in the world, where you will find so much historical significance, as this place, dont miss it.
