The Dark Horse Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 How fair is it to Che Pujara to not get an Indian cap while a player who plays for the Indian skip's IPL team gets a chance to play tests and even captain the national team, despite being half the player Pujara is? What was the point of tokenism in dropping Raina in 2007 and then welcoming him with open arms after one good IPL? I would pick Badrinath over Raina. Just what wrong have Badri and Che done? Do they escape their chances just because they aren't matey with the selector or because the skip isn't their friend? Its not just the coaches who say that Che is a great batsman. You've yourself said it too. Check out his thread that you have posted in. It is not Che's fault that he hasn't got the chance to prove himself. The blame rests with the selectors and the captain to continue who back half-baked players over proven performers in the competitive longer formats of the game. I would be happy if Suresh does well. But I would pick Badri and Che over him ANY DAY. Playing for India has had a major say in selecting a team regardless of the format- which IMO is not good. UV was picked from ODI performances due to which players like Badri lost their chances when Ganguly called it a day(in tests). But unfortunately Raina has been picked over Pujara for the same reason and has done quite well- I hope he does well and I hope Pujara too gets picked soon when he is in good touch -after piling so much of runs in the domestics he definitely deserves a go.
Karan114 Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 But for some strange reasons India played ultra defensively and lost the plot and the Test. A golden opportunity to win a test series was wasted. Indeed, that crawl against Paul Harris and subsequent collapse just when we were getting into a position to win the series :((
achilles Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 So if in the next IPL auction CSK buy Cheteswar Pujara' date=' I take it you will stop saying that Pujara deserves a spot in the Indian team because he plays for CSK?[/quote'] You know what I meant and you are twisting my statement to suit you. Lets agree to disagree. Playing for India has had a major say in selecting a team regardless of the format- which IMO is not good. UV was picked from ODI performances due to which players like Badri lost their chances when Ganguly called it a day(in tests). Yes and to take your point forward and using stats to back my case, I think Che Pujara has done a phenomenal job in the domestic structure, before and after his injury. I hope he gets into the Test team atleast. He deserves to be in there more than Raina. Not everyone has the character to debut at the age of 32, like Mike Hussey and with a smile on the face. Look at Badri now. He's losing motivation because he gets dropped even after scoring a 50 in his final test when the entire team was struggling to get off the mark.

What was the point of tokenism in dropping Raina in 2007 and then welcoming him with open arms after one good IPL?[/quote'] Raina was recalled to the Indian squad for the CB Series in February 2008, before the first IPL, even though he didn't play a match in that series (http://www.cricinfo.com/cbs/content/story/332389.html). Raina was earmarked for Indian honors from an early age and was always going to come back into the side. While he has a clear problem against the short ball, how anyone can attribute his presence in the side to Dhoni favoring him because of the IPL given his record in all three forms of the game since his comeback is beyond me.
UmarAkmal Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Raina against Steyn & Morkel would be fun. Even Tendulkar has been a failure in SA with average in 30s so Raina has no chance there.

Thanks for correcting me. As for the latter part, we have a case-in-point: Yusuf Pathan. He's had a good performance for he has been persisted with. Persisting with Che would've helped too.

As for Cheteswar Pujara, he will get his chance too, I just dont understand how you think that Raina whos earned his way into the test team should be dropped for Chetswar Pujara.
Manny_Pacquiao Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 he isnt a natural puller or hooker of the ball, so he will probably avoid everything that bounces above waist height. in test cricket its not that big a deal. he will kill anything with a bit of width though. personally i prefer pujara but whatever
vvvslaxman Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Raina against Steyn & Morkel would be fun. Even Tendulkar has been a failure in SA with average in 30s so Raina has no chance there. Raina is miles better than your best batsman Mohammad Aamer :icflove:

I'm simply telling Karan about an instance where a player was favoured because of his IPL form. And the thing I don't understand is why was Raina preferred over Che and Badri. These 2 guys have been playing good for an eternity. Like I've said, I hope Suresh does well. But the better batsmen who are technically superior to Suresh are the one's who are still playing Domestic. Tere mooh mein gud-shakkar and I hope Che and/or Badri play for the Test team after the SA series. Sachin + Miandad = Umar Akmal - Channel 9 team :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: Lol, I was sure someone's gonna pick on it.

This is what you said: while a player who plays for the Indian skip's IPL team gets a chance to play tests and even captain the national team Does Yusuf Pathan play for the Indian skipper's IPL team? Anyway, comparing some bits and pieces rubbish all-rounder with one of India's brightest batting prospects is absurd.
Gunner_Mania Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Listen to Ian Healy at 20 sec Tried, but didnt hear him say anything at 20 sec that remoteley sounded like Miandad or Tendulkar

Anyway, comparing some bits and pieces rubbish all-rounder with one of India's brightest batting prospects is absurd. Vijay, Gony, Balaji & Ashwiin were given One-Day caps after successful IPLs. They played for the franchise we know about. Cheteshwar and Badri are superior batsmen. We all know it. Comparing or not doesn't change the fact that he DID play. Tried' date=' but didnt hear him say anything at 20 sec that remoteley sounded like Miandad or Tendulkar[/quote'] Scroll to the 40th sec.

He was favoured because of his IPL form in a form that he may have succeeded - T20 or ODIs not tests. We are talking about tests , those 2 comparison doesnt even makes sense. As for Raina & Pujara, I think Raina grabbed his chances and he couldnt even make his way into the ODI even after his OD performances. The problem was not Raina but Yuvi being there when Ganguly moved out. If Yuvi can get a chance over Raina, why not Raina get a chance and frankly its not long before Laxman & Dravid move out. I don't know about Badri, but Pujara will and should definitely get his chance.
Manny_Pacquiao Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Listen to Ian Healy at 20 sec where does he say anything about miandad or tendulkar? PS, the idea of a paki making a video of Umar akmal's failure of a tour in australia (batting average 33 LOLOLOLOL) is absolutely hilarious :hysterical::hysterical:

After he was dropped post the SA ODIs in 2006, he went back to domestic cricket, scored runs and earned a place in the CB series team, Did not get a game there, played in the IPL, was the most impressive young batsmen then, did well in the tri series we played in Bangladesh , Asia CUp in 2008, helped us win the SL ODI series in 2008 (in absence of Sachin and Sehwag) . COntinued to build on the ODI successes and earned a rightful place in the test team. On his friendship with Dhoni, Robin Uthappa and RP Singh are Dhoni's 2 best friends. How many tests/ODIs have they played without performing?

Raina is a case of fast-tracking a young player with a major flaw in his technique and we all know how risky it is. All I'm saying is that if we are giving caps to prepare a player for the future, why not give Che his chance.
