I thought Barry was a right hand batsman. I hope you are not confusing him with Grahme Pollock.
Oops! Thanks for pointing out. My bad. Was thinking of one player while writing about the other. I know the choice for having Sangakkara as opener is not there. But that is what I would do in this situation. :)

Wy wouldn't you pick Jayasuria / Graeme Smith then?

I would rather pick a walking wicket than Graeme Smith in a World XI. His only distinction to me is that he is the only opener in the world (perhaps in the history of the game) unable to play a front foot cover drive!! Consider me biased :). Seriously though he is an effective player for his team. But to consider him for a World XI is taking things a bit too far. Jayasuriya is really not a Test opener, Gunner! I am not too sure too many would think of him that way. Hence I would rather have Sangakkara play as a specialist opener. Not bad at all, if I may say so.

Saeed Anwar is another one. I am just picking the left handers. If you were looking for balance. I don't know much about the other old age names there. I chose Gavaskar in my team with Sehwag, but I would have gone with Greenisge too, because I balanced my left handers in the rest of the team:)

I understand your chioce of Greenidge. It is a tempting combination to be sure. But I think starting with a left and right combination right at the top would be fantastic. All the worse for the opposition bowlers. Saeed Anwar is better than Jayasuriya but still nowhere near good enough to be talked about in an all time World XI. In any case, Sangakkara comfortably out-bats any of the other contenders spoken about. Especially the left handed ones. Dont you think?

Why wouldn't you be tempted to open with Glichrist. Agreed that he is not a Test opener and opens only in ODIs, but would you be tempted to use him as an opener and then get an extra batsman or bowler in the team:)

Gilchrist's loose limbed batting will look good and work well later on. Not against the new ball and against fresh bowlers. Like I said, Sangakkara comfortably out-bats all the other left handed options out there.

I think Sangakarra is much ahead of Gilchrist in tests (maybe not in ODIs). Hes the no.1 test batsmen, and has scored everywhere. But, the world test XI doesnt require whining. So maybe gilchrist would be better.
