jusarrived Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 This is the first time Laxman getting into entry. the article says hes been up to 8th in the past
vvvslaxman Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 the article says hes been up to 8th in the past My bad. Good for him to climb back up to top 10.
Raghav_12 Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 This shows that why these rankings can not be used to measure actual value of batsmen. Looking at performances of Laxman for Indian team, ideally he should have spent much more time in top 10 than he actually did.
Jersey #10 Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 ^It obviously means that there are other guys who are much much better than Laxman. Laxman has become an overnight sensational hero after the last test but that's alright. No one can be as consistent as Sachin anyways.

Rankings look only on few tangible parameters which essentially don't capture the importance of runs that one scores. Of course other guys would be better than Laxman on paramaters which rankings care for, but Laxman has definitely been more valuable than what rankings suggest. No need to bring Sachin here.
Shawn Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Deserves it.Great player in crisis situations.

Looking at performances of Laxman for Indian team' date=' ideally he should have spent much more time in top 10 than he actually did.[/quote'] its just based on the amount of runs a batsmen scores , not entirely flawed either ... VVS would have avg ~55 had he played higher up the order .

Laxman is in the form of his life now but his past performances, particularly overseas, are nothing to write home about. Hussey is in exactly the same position for Australia and he still averages very high. I would wager his average would remain the same no matter where he batted

Perhaps you have been switching off the television after Tendulkar gets out.
saneindian Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Well deserved for a truly great batsman. It's amazing how he has had to play through his career with question marks over his test spot after a couple of failures. Had Dada asked VVS to move to number 5 when his own test batting form went down considerably after 2003, VVS could well have been nearing the 10k mark with a batting average of 50+ by now. I hope all those "missed" runs during those years and earlier, keep VVS motivated for the next 2-3 years. I would love to see him finish with a career batting average of 50+ (but for those early years when he was forced to open, his avg actually is 50+).

Next you say VVS' away record is nothing to write home about . Have you checked the away record of Hussey whom you have used as a benchmark for VVS? VVS- avg away from home 46 Hussey - avg away from home 39 Enuff said.
The Outsider Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 ^ This is what happens when people follow the sport for hero worshiping one person, rather than for the enjoyment and understanding of the game. There is no sense of perspective. Laxman has been the cornerstone of so many great Indian performances abroad - Sydney (3 times), Adelaide, Port of Spain, Brisbane, Johannesburg, Durban, Perth, Colombo, Napier. This is just overseas.

I think India's performances in Sydney for last three times (with VVS Laxman in team) hasn't been great by any standard. First of these three times, India lost by an innings. Second time it was a draw and third time India lost albiet controversially. Though Laxman's performances have been great at all occassions, but which one you actually termas "great indian performances at Sydney"? I think none of them was great Indian performance, forget about three.

Well said. Hero worship is ugly part of our culture. Be it in sports, movies or politics.
gaurav92 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Laxman has batted really well, and deserves to be in Top 10. :two_thumbs_up:

But I disagree on the other two - scoring 700 runs against Australia in their backyard, and putting them on the verge of a series defeat was a great performance. With better umpiring and any decent support to Kumble the result would have been different. And we all know what happened in '08. In the first innings though, India did manage a lead and that batting performance turned the series around for them. It was Laxman's counterattack which made the team believe that they could score runs after Melbourne.
