Students suspended for rude Facebook messages

A leading school in India has suspended 16 students for posting rude remarks about a woman teacher on the popular social networking site, Facebook. The comments were started by a student of Chandigarh's prestigious Vivek High School who was angry with his math teacher for giving him low grades. Fifteen other classmates were suspended for allegedly egging him on. Facebook has nearly 12 million Indian subscribers and the site is hugely popular with young urban Indians. High school student Asaf Pervez initiated the online "thread" by posting images of his test scores alongside "rude and abusive" remarks, the school management said. The "abusive" thread soon became a regular forum for the school's senior students to indulge in teacher-bashing, an official said. The comments were discovered by chance a week later by a faculty member. Shocked at what she saw, the teacher reported the matter to the school management, which responded by suspending the students. "We cannot tolerate indiscipline, particularly disrespect towards any teacher," school director HS Mamik, who ordered a three-month suspension after individually meeting parents of each of the 16 teenagers, said. "The comments posted are not just negative but obscene, rude and abusive." The suspended students said the management's action infringed their privacy and right to free expression. "The school has no business to peep into our personal and online lives," one girl student told a reporter. Most parents agree that children must respect their teachers. But they say the three month suspension is excessive, specially during the final year of school. The school management has now agreed to review the penalty at a meeting on 18 October. Many educationists and school principals in Chandigarh say internet allows easy access to obscenity which, they say, is increasingly finding expression in the lives of school children. They have called for mandatory and stricter parental controls over children's browsing habits.

It happened a lot all around the world. My school monitors any suspicious activities among students on facebook. (pranks, crimes, bad mouthign against teachers etc.)

I am quite sure they must have used MC, BC, ***** etc. words and not simple abusive language for which they might have been suspended. Remember she was a female teacher as mentioned. I would say absolutely justified activity by the school to teach them a lesson. A Teacher/Guru holds nearly equal value in our society to our parents and the abusive words cannot be justified at all. I am cent percent sure it would not have been just abusive language but would have been character assassination in most probability. Suspension is completely justified without any doubt.

Oh oh, this is now becoming eerily similar to the stories you hear in the USofA. Btw, 3 months suspension? Thats probably a little harsh. Their whole school year is ruined! WTF how can students be suspended for Abusing Teachers on Social Forums and Social Networking sites? I can do anything i want outside the premisses of school. I put up Status msgs everyday against My university and College prof on Social networking sites, None can get hold even a whisker of me for doing that. During my school i had no acess to social Networking sites, so dont know if they could have bothered me or not. Surely none can do anything about that in Coleges.

Irrespective of where and how you do it, an insult is an insult and Indian law (as well as law in other places) provides for compensation to the person or organization that the insult was directed at and to any other aggrieved party. In certain cases, you can also be sentenced to a jail term. If the insults are sexual in nature or are offensive to a community, the jail term can be quite long. And yes, the organization that the insult was directed at can decide to sever all connections with you based on these insults. Free speech is often interpreted as freedom to say whatever you want. It's not so. You can not say things that can hurt other people without a valid reason. And dont take pride on beating up a teacher. That is not a very nice thing to do.

I agree with most of what you said, Yes its not somthing to boast about when it comes to beating up teachers, But teachers shouldnt beat up students too. During our 11-12 the school i took admission in had a fashion of beating up students for even the slightest of reasons. So my ideology was/is if they can beat us up, why cant we? May be no one on this board agree with this, But i have always given it back what i got. That has been my policy all my life. Am generally well manered, But dont bother to cross the line if someone does before me.
