Can anyone explain to a politics noob the difference between houses and what it means now that Repubs have won the house of congress...I heard that the congress 'controls the pursestrings' so any decision has to be accepted by the house of Congr for it to be law...that roughly true? And also what the Senate (and senators) do,...how does it differ from a governer hmm might just google all that hehe... but any explanations will be rewarded with a :rose: :icflove:

congress=house+senate house gets re-elected every 2 years, with 435 members, and each state having members proportionate to population(e.g. 50 from California to 2 from Montana) House has powers similar to Lok Sabha in the sense that monetary bills need to be introduced first in the House. Senate members have 6 yr term (1/3 are up for election every 2 years) and each state has only 2 members. Senate does confirmation hearings, non-monetary bills etc. More prestigious, obviously. Senators are completely different from governers. Governors are equivalent of chief ministers in India, while senators are MPs.

Personally don't have any stake in the elections, but the political discourse in the US elections is so appalling, yet entertaining for someone like me. Almost every pertinent issue can reduced the a shouting contest by the media who essentially does the propaganda for the parties. To be honest, Republicans should be in power, for they truly are better representatives of the dumb electorate. Either way nothing is going to change.

Thats a fatalistic view. If you have been following closely, a LOT of things have changed in 2 years. The dems have passed a whole lot of bills, despite the "party of no" fillibustering every damn thing. Health care, and Credit cards regulations affect a lot of people I know. Now there are fears Rand Paul, high as he is on tea, could filibuster the raising of national debt ceiling, leading to US govt. defaulting on loans. :hysterical:

Ah Yoda, either you did not understand what i said or i didn put it forth clearly... I bought the Pres in not to mean he didnt fight his way, but to opine that he does not truely believe his own policies. :two_thumbs_up:

BTW even after all this "victory", 2/3 of govt still controlled by Dems atleast for 2 more years. :winky: The closest the Repubs will come to accomplishing anything would be to try repeal anything Obama has done, only to see it stop at the Senate or end up getting Vetoed. :yay:

Err, not really... Like i previously pointed out the 3 branches of the Govt are split right to the middle. Legislative - 1/2 and 1/2 Executive - Liberal Judicial - Conservatives by 5-4
