By Abhideep Das Ravichandran Ashwin was a relatively unknown quantity prior to IPL 3. But a fantastic showing during the tournament catapulted the off-spinner into national reckoning. Playing only his third ODI on Sunday against New Zealand at Guwahati, Ashwin picked up a career-best 3/50. Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar feels that the Chennai-based bowler has it in him to be successful in international cricket. Speaking exclusively to MOBILE ESPN from Mumbai after the game, Manjrekar said, "Ashwin was the most impressive of all the Indian bowlers on Sunday. He bowled with confidence during the power-play overs. He has recently developed a well disguised leg-cutter. This delivery foxed quite a few of the Kiwi batsmen. He is definitely a future star." Ashwin has been in great form this year. After making his debut for India in both the T20I and ODI format in Zimbabwe, the 24-year-old played an instrumental role during the victorious Champions League campaign of Chennai Super Kings in September. He emerged as the highest wicket taker in that tournament with 13 scalps and was adjudged Man-of- the-Series. Virat Kohli, who hit a match-winning 105 (4th ODI century since December 2009) on Sunday, is maturing with every innings, according to Manjrekar. "Whenever he gets in, Kohli looks to get a big score. He was very disappointed when he got out and this is an extremely good sign in a young man that he is not satisfied even after getting a hundred," Manjrekar added. Kohli has been having a golden run of late as the knock at Guwahati was his second-straight ODI ton. Earlier against Australia, the 22-year-old Delhi player had scored a classy 118 in the only ODI of the 3-match (other 2 being washed out due to rain) series at Vishakapatnam. In between, he also got back-to-back Ranji trophy hundreds for Delhi against Bengal and Tamil Nadu, respectively. Manjrekar, an ESPN-STAR Sports expert, added that the biggest gain for the hosts in Sunday's ODI win was the performance of Yuvraj Singh as a bowler, where he picked up 3 wickets. "Some of the self-confidence that Yuvraj badly needs at this stage of his career would have come from his bowling performance in this match. Once he gets some confidence as a player, it is a matter of time before it spills onto his batting," said Manjrekar.
