England- Best Team in the World ?

They have got a lot going for them. Best spinner in the world. Varied pace attack with Swing, Seam and pace at disposal. They also have the best reserve bowling attack with Bresnan, Tremlett not even present in the first team at the start of this series. Not the best batting line up in the world, but good enough I think. They are susceptible to bounce but you don't get many wickets like Perth. Above all, the average age of the side is less than 30 which is absolutely critical. A request for members. Pls. do not read it as an anti-India thread. For all I know India might beat them next year, but there are severe issues esp. in bowling other than Zak and Bhajji to some extent. Also, most of our greats are closer to the end of their careers and there are no apparent replacements. PS:- England still have a lot to prove. This current set has not won one series outside England other than NZ. But on paper they have a lot going for them. I am not reading too much into the perfomance against the hapless Aussie side.

No India has won 5 out of the last 7 series and hasnt lost a series for 1 year or 2. India is the best team in the world followed by SA. A team is not sum of all its part, its how they play as a team.

No, they are looking that good because besides their good performance, Australia is playing that bad as well. Yeah, the same Australia who could not win a series against Pakistan. England will have to do a little more to be called the best team. India has been doing excellently for sometime now sitting confidently at no1 position and still many fans dont accept us as the best team.

Count me in one of those fans. Ofcourse winning in Aus, Sa and Eng in coming year will shut all of us up. he perfomance yesterday was heartening but the batting is clearly out of sorts.

In the last two years, England have won five of the eight series they have played (including the current one), drawn one and lost one. Looks good, doesn't it? But who have they won against? Twice against Bangladesh, once against Pakistan and once against Australia. And yes, the one they lost was against West Idies. Not impressive. Not enough.

What have they done to be considered better than India and SA?

my buddy serena is gonna love this thread but its true, england have got a lot going for them. at this present time, i think india are a better side and will prove it later this year when they tour england. but speaking from a long term point of view, england are in a better position than india. unfortunately india is going to see a period of transistion soon as dravid, tendulkar retire. laxman isnt far off either. they will take over india's number 1 ranking in 2 years time, maybe even sooner. hopefully india will keep putting daylight between themselves and the other teams in the ICC rankings so a few losses won't hurt the ranking too much.

england are level with SA but miles ahead of the crappy flat track bullies sri lanka. the test championship is basically a three way with england, south africa and india, with india ahead of the two at the moment.

The best is India, but England have come a long long way.. In a few years I think they will have the best side in the world. For me, it goes India, SA, England.. I still believe Australia are better than Sri Lanka.. Unfortunately for Aus though they've fallen a fair way behind the other 3 now and have got to start introducing new players. But to answer the OP, no.. Not yet, that would be unfair on India who have proven to be the best side in the world over the last few years. England need to beat SA and India before they could be considered the best in the world.

I think "most promising", "team to watch out for"...would be more better choice of titles. "Best" (without a qualifier word) should be used only with performances to back up with and ratings take good care of that.

India haven't beaten SA in SA. They haven't even drawn with SA. In last 10 years they haven't even beaten SA in India. Eng. have drawn last series with SA. If who has beaten whom is the criteria, then Australia even with its woeful form will be the best considering that they have beaten all 3 sides home and away this decade.
