Most exciting Test series of the decade

in 03 series India won a test in aus both warne and mcgrath were missing; can we go ahead and discredit our win aswell.

I dont rate 2003-4 BG very highly tbh.No Mcgrath makes them far far far less threatening.We would have hammered Warne anyway.Had Mcgrath been there we would have probably lost 2-0.

BG 01 and Ashes 05. Could watch more live of Ashes 05 due to timezone differences, so may be I am biased cause of that. There were some pretty close finishes in 05 with the teams well balanced and BG 01 was the mother of all comebacks.

In my book, the Ashes 2005 and BG series 2001 are tied for no.1. There’s no way you can big up one over the other. One of my most indelible cricketing memories was Tony Blair, the then British Prime Minister, standing up and updating the MPs in the House of Commons with the score during the 5th and final test. That is how intense that test series was. Of course, BG series 2001 is special for so many reasons.. The 2007/08 BG series would come a close 2nd, for the sheer volume of controversy and international headlines it generated. The rest, you can pretty much put wherever you want. I’d add the 2008/09 Wisden trophy between England and West Indies in West Indies. From a cricketing standpoint, that series had EVERYTHING – An incredible English collapse in the first test, a match abandoned due to a sandy outfield (!) in the 2nd, one of the most boringest draws in the history of humanity in the 4th and TWO nail-biting finishes in the 3rd and the 5th where the West Indies hung on for dear life to secure the series win, 1-0.

BG01 was more like an inspiring David vs Goliath story triumph story but in terms of sheer competitiveness from both sides Ashes 05 was better in my opinion.

Ashes 2005 for me, never expected them to beat OZ, then again McGrath was injured and didn't play in the matches Englerland won so guess credit shouldn't be given to their team either

Agree but the BG trophy in 01 had more than just cricket riding on it. A lot of egos and pride. Aus were on verge of a World record of winning most games consecutively. When they won the 1st test, they were tied for world record at 16 games won. Steve Waugh considered this series to be his final frontier as he had won in most other places but not in India for 30 years. The whole Aussie team playing the Ganguly-Nagma affair up and talking about it in media. Maybe this was in 2003 but anyway there was plenty of bad blood between the Aussies and Ganguly with ganguly even making Waugh wait for the toss. We lost kumble and our most experienced spinner in our side was a rookie with just 8 games under his belt. Warne Vs India At the end of day 2 in the 2nd test when India were almost down and out, Waugh, after the days play was over, celebrated as if he had finally conquered the final frontier.

For an India BG Trophy 2001 was classic, but from Cricket's point of view (taking a neutral perspetive), Ashes 2005 was a notch better.

Personally, I would say the BG Series 2001. During that time, I was a die hard cricket fan and very passionate about the game back then than now. Probably because starved of good coverage back then. To watch the game live at that time was a bit tough and used to lurk around on Cricinfo's IRC channel a lot. But for this and the Zimbabwe series, this series was streamed online for free by a site whose name I dont really remember exactly. Something like DD (Doordarshan something..) or ddindia... now.. Can't really recall it but it was quite was amazing and I used to hook up my VCR to the computer and record all the action for achives. I still have those video cassettes but the that old VCR has stopped working now. :-) Good memories associated with the series. As for the series, not much to say except an epic series.

Ashes 2005 for me. Seriously no seires in cricket history can ever come close to that.

'01 simply because India won two matches with McGrath in the opposing line up. '05 was exciting but overhyped due to his absence, I'll put the at number 2. If we allow another year in the choices then Lara's series in WI in '99-'00 would be number 2.

01 series was spectacular if you were an India fan but 05 ashes were far better

i'd say both series were equally good and gave different dimensions to the game 01 series was the first time that a team seriously challanged the regime of the mighty australian side and showed to the world that though australia is the team to beat in test but not invincible and as far as 05 ashes is concerned it was the first chinks in the aussie armor ,which showed that how important players like mcgrath and company are for australian success and when they retire australia won't be the same side 'that was the time acb should have looked for a proper replacment for guys like haydos,gilly,mcgrath gillispie martyn, langer and ofcourse warnie coz they were at the end of there carrier and not look at short time replacement such as stuart clark and now boy they seriously miss warne.

Apart from these options, india-england test series of 2008 is right up there for the quality of cricket, with englands big guns flintoff, swann n pieterson all in form. IMO, tht is the most underrated series of the decade. Too bad it was a short series.

Its wasnt much of a series, one test at chennai and then a weather affected test in mohali.
