vvvslaxman Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 This match brutally exposed that. South African commies kept on bringing sayingt "SA will miss Kallis services". Even when they have likes of Steyn, Morkel they are missing a 5th bowling option. In India's case it is everyday's business. 3 seamers and a spinner. Their speed drastically reduces and effectiveness goes down as the day progresses. If not pace atleast a decent spinning all rounder is a must just to share the overs.

When Ind was struggling to pick wkts up, I felt may be if he had played 5 bowlers by including Ojha in place of one of the batsmen (Pujara), it may have helped to bundle out SA cheaply and who knows we could have won this test!
yoda Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 As much as I don't like to bring up his name due to his ineffective bowling, Irfan anyone? He can probably bat better than anyone we have tried in the 7th slot, but not sure if he can buy any wickets anywhere. I don't think we need another spinner part-timer as we got plenty of them already namely SRT, Sehwag.
The Outsider Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 LOL! Of course, India needs a bowling all rounder, or even a batting all rounder. India also needs a couple of world class accurate fast bowlers. They also need a spinner who can consistently win them matches. Is there a point discussing these wish lists if there is no credible candidate worthy of the discussion?
kabira Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 well Aussies have Watson and Smith They did jack with them England had none..and still winning. All you need is competent 4 bowlers and competent 6 batsman and a keeper who can bat Thats it

Getting world accurate fast bowlers may be a wish list. But 5th bowling option is not a wish list. It is possible.
Guest Gunner Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Our problem continues with bowling, other than Zaheer (even him not at all times) we don't have anyone reliable consistently. This was exposed yesterday when we had them at 130/6 and we couldn't force a win. It's a terrible situation.

All you need is competent 4 bowlers and competent 6 batsman and a keeper who can bat Thats it They were grossly mismatched formwise. That is not a pretty good example. Our bowlers lose pace rapidly over the course of a day's play. Unless we have bowlers to start sharing the load it could affect us in two ways. Injuries to existing bowlers and struggling to get the lower order out.

But 5th bowling option is not a wish list. It is possible. How will Irfan fill that spot? He hasn't bowled a single ball in competitive cricket for 9 months now and is unlikely to play any FC match for another year almost.

If he is bowling crap then it would be like playing with only 2 seamers in conditions that are suppose to help them.

He provides immense balance to the team. It is not like he has retired from cricket. He is going to play next season.
zen Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 I wouldn't play an all-rounder just for the sake of having an all-rounder. He should be good enough in at least one dept to make it to the 11 and fairly competitive in the other. If we don't have a good all-rounder to balance the side, then we have to make use of the specialists. By looking at the pitch and conditions, along with your strength and weaknesses, you could determine whether to go with 4 or 5 bowlers. If you look at the conditions and feel that you should be bowling the other team out of 250 to have a chance of winning this then you know you need an extra bowler. If you think that you need to score 400 then you probably should play the batsmen. There are no right or wrong answers as at the end of the day its how good you use your resources that counts but a brilliant captain (or management) should be able to make calls, along with getting the best out of the resources, that makes the difference b/w two evenly matched teams.
cowboysfan Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Irfan needs to get his **** together and start bowling with some consistency before the England series.I would not hesitate to include him if he is some kind of form with the ball.
akshayxyz Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Before searching for allrounder - we need a full time front line bowlers. As of now its just bhajji+ zahir - and they can also have few bad sessions. That is when other front line bowlers have to stand up and make their position count.
kabira Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 well if SEhwag was fit, we would have our batting allrounder.. The guy is very good off spinner
cowboysfan Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 the only concern for the england series is Ishant.I really thought he will bowl well in SA(with the extra bounce)but he was a stress reliever for the Saffers rather than a wicket taker for us.I would look for another swing bowler and seriously consider dropping Ishant if his form doesnt improve dramatically .

spectre Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Forget allrounder, India needs some quality pacemen to replace Ishant The good old RPS comes to my mind, but last I heard he can screwed himself up badly.

cowboysfan Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 ishant needs to be dropped ASAP but who do u replace him with? I would hope it is RPS but his form is very iffy right now.It might change before the series though.
