Ram Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 ^ How would the player be even certain that the approach from some player was for a bookie if it was kept subtle enough. Just making up stuff here, but if Jadeja told Tendulkar casually, 'Damn! You won't believe it. I met this guy at a party willing to give me his Rolex just for telling him if we would bat or bowl after winning the toss! What kind of a fool would do that when everyone in the world knows this is a bat first pitch'. An abrupt close of the subject would mean Tendulkar is off limits and yet Tendulkar has no idea that some approach was made by a fellow player. If on the other hand he shows some interest things would move forward. Arent you contradicting yourself here? First you Jadeja would have never taken that forward because Sachin shut that conversation down immediately, but you also say that the approach was so subtle that Sachin didn’t know something fishy was going on in the background. And by the way, just putting myself in the situation you described, if one of my team-mate comes to me and says the exact same line that Jadeja told Sachin in your imaginary situation, trust me, there’s nothing subtle about that. I would exactly know what was going on. In none of the player or bookie testimonies was it mentioned that Tendulkar was introduced to some bookie. There were 10s of players mentioned who were introduced at some point or the other (not all might have fixed matches of course) - why was his and quite a few other players' names like Kumble' date=' Srinath consistently absent? [/quote'] Again, I am willing to concede that Sachin might have never been directly approached by a bookie. But I am 100% sure that one of the tainted players broached him with a tempting proposition at some or the other, either in their volition or acting on behalf of their bookie friends. Sure, he could have completely cold-shouldered them (which is probably what happened), but that is not what I am talking about here. My only problem is with his statement that he was never approached.
coffee_rules Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Well, techincally he was never approached. We read the same about others in the Indian team - VVSL, Dravid, Sehwag, Harbhajan, Kumble etc. who have claimed that they have never been approached by any match fixer. Why aren't the match fixers not targetting umpires till now? They are easy soft targets as well. I am afraid they will be next. Rauf could be the next Butt of all enquires!
The Outsider Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Arent you contradicting yourself here? First you Jadeja would have never taken that forward because Sachin shut that conversation down immediately, but you also say that the approach was so subtle that Sachin didn’t know something fishy was going on in the background. Not at all. From Jadeja's perspective, the response he got was enough to shut off further contact, but from Tendulkar's perspective he did not notice anything untoward. And by the way, just putting myself in the situation you described, if one of my team-mate comes to me and says the exact same line that Jadeja told Sachin in your imaginary situation, trust me, there’s nothing subtle about that. I would exactly know what was going on. Well, I am not a professional at this. :D It could have been different words. But even in this scenario, I guess the context matters. Remember, this is all before any match fixing scandal broke out, so the above statement could well be part of a dressing room chit chat of weird things fans do etc. and could easily slide by without arousing any suspicion. Again, I am willing to concede that Sachin might have never been directly approached by a bookie. Possible. But if the proposition was just a subtle feeler to get a response, Tendulkar might not have noticed it. And if he thinks back to the incident(s) 15 years later, he might think - well that could have been Jadeja trying to approach me, or that was a weird thing Azhar said, but really nothing more than that which can be definitely classified as an approach by a bookie.
Deleted_User_1 Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 The fact that Tendy's name never came up during investigation or from a bookie/ex-player, I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he was never approached. It is very possible. Now whether he did or did not know something fishy was going around him, I do not know. I believe he had an inkling, but did not want to stir things up.
Bublu Bhuyan Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Huh.. how come third one was debatable? It was too high and had hit him above knee and as per Cricinfo commentory it was definitely a bad decision. 2nd was also a bad decision and Sachin was unfortunate to be given out like that. Over all 3 bad decisions in 6 innings is bad enough. Don't you think so? The 2nd one was debatable in the sense that hawkeye was not used (or maybe was not available then). It appeared little high to the naked eye, but having watched it myself I can't say 100% for sure that it would have missed the stumps. The 3rd one is without a doubt the most controversial LBW decision in history. But there have been lots of ex-cricketers who voiced their opinion at that time that while it was unfortunate, but as per rules of the game, the umpire had to give that out.
vamos_rafa Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 HUH? Didn't match fixing episode come to the light in 2000 after we completed the Aus tour and SA home series. Yeah that's exactly what I thought as well... :sherlock:
Bublu Bhuyan Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Yeah that's exactly what I thought as well... :sherlock: It might have been making rounds in the inner circle before that.
vamos_rafa Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 It might have been making rounds in the inner circle before that. Hmm may be. But he's also stated that fans used to jeer at the team and make all kinds of remarks. Anyways it would have taken a toll on him mentally once the news came around.
vayuu1 Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 I call that "Debang Gandhi" tour :cantstop: One of the worst to represent India. From a personal point of view Sachin won man of the series. no it was bombay oops mumbai duck tour:((
