In contrast to Mulholand Drive, Shutter Island leaves too many loose ends for either ending to be believable. On the contrary, Mulholand Drive tied up so many plausible endings with them being equally believable.

Roshanrocks Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 isnt it clear that Leonardo was insane since the begining? and that ben kingsley allowed him to live out his elaborate fantasy so that in the end he could confront the truth that he had killed his wife who in turn had killed his kids. Leo had thought out the entire thing in his own mind. most of what was going on was his fantasy... including in the end when he shoots iwth his gun and finds out it is a toy. In order to shut out his trauma he had devised this fantasy world where he is lookin for the non- existent killer of his family. Ben Kingsley had hoped that he would come out of his fantasy n face reality once he is confronted with it...unfortunately the next day he goes back to his fantasy world which implies that Kingsley's treatment was unsuccessful which in turn meant that Leonardo had become too dangerous to be left alone and thus had to be sent for lobotomy Ben Kingsley "The doctor" had tried to cure Leo through his "revolutionary" idea and had failed
coffee_rules Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 There is no confusion about sane or insane. He was clearly insane. The guards are bit jumpy when they arrive. The dreams have a lot of connection. He had hallucinations from the start. The first time he went to the lighthouse, he is made to believe that his partner is dead. May be he was under surveillance all along. Except for the time, in the end when he is allowed to blow the car, which I think is a gaping hole, the whole plot of making the viewers believe something else, while the truth is revealed only in the end...is a classic suspense thriller. Yes, the whole island involved in role play just to cure this one person is a bit too much to believe. I think in the end when he says he can't decide what is worse, living a monster or die as a good man, made me think that he was cured in the end, but he wanted to end his life. He had given up wanting to live the life like that in the island. They should have left the end to the viewer to believe whether he was sane or insane. If the conspiracy theory was made the truth (like the Manchurian Candidate), it would have been a better movie.
