The last time England toured here in late 2008 they were white washed 5-0 in ODIs. Their batsmen like Bopara, Cook, Peterson, Bell, Prior, Collingwood largely failed in Indian conditions with the spinners really choking off their scoring. They also had Broad, Swann, Anderson and all three hardly made a dent in the Indian batting lineup with our batsmen dominating them. As a matter of fact the last time Jimmy Anderson toured in the ODI series here he didn't pick up a single freaking wicket in 4 ODIs, while all our bowlers, even part timers like Yuvi/Sehwag did very well. Owais Shah and Peterson were the only batsmen that had any success and Shah isn't even in the squad any more.

No finishers, (except overrated morgan who has played like 3 good knocks), no pinch hitter, no star batsman(except KP who is again temperemental), no dominating opener like sehwag/dilshan.

Anyone going to convince me that their current bowling lineup is better in India than Swann/Anderson/Broad/Freddie/Harmison when they got white washed here?
gaurav92 Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Agreed.England are a better side while playing at home, or at conditions favouring their paceman.Although they have the world's best spinner, they don't have the batting to play good quality spin.But at the same time, I am sure, they will make it to the semis :nice:

Owais Shah and Peterson were the only batsmen that had any success and Shah isn't even in the squad any more. all very valid points but u also have to consider that india were in unbelievably good form back then - the batting lineup was dynamite, especially with yuvraj playing some of the best cricket of his life. sehwag, dhoni, even yusuf pathan played good knocks at various stages of that series. is india's batting in the same form right now? the MVP of that series - yuvraj - is a shadow of the monster who demolished those english attacks. sehwag, gambhir, tendulkar have injury concerns england have improved a bit since then, with swann turning into one of the best spinners in all forms and they have found other ODI specialists like morgan, yardy, bresnan. flintoff is a huge loss because he was a quality player. swann and yardy are good spin options, although their fast bowlers might get a pasting. the only reasaon one can doubt england is if u think about their lack of experience in the subcontinent. they havent played much in subcon, aside from a series against bangladesh. they did win the t20 world cup after all, so they are better in the limited overs game than they once were and here is the most important point. while its true that india could absolutely demolish england at home in a SERIES, the world cup is about 1 game. england are more than capable of winning a one-off knockout game against india.

Maybe, but I would say the only genuine cause for concern for India is to play the one off match like in the quarters or semis and lose the toss in a day night match. Chasing at night against the kookaburra and pretty much all bets are off. India have beaten much better teams than England in subcontinent conditions like South Africa/Sri Lanka recently with many of their senior players missing. Losing against England will just mean our players massively underperformed and as such would deserve full criticism.
