Two upsets today. In the 1st pre QF, Vidharbha upset Punjab. Vidarbha 278/8, Punjab 178 all out http://www.espncricinfo.com/indiandomestic2010/engine/current/match/471562.html 2nd Pre QF- Gujarat beat Karnataka. Gujarat scored 168 and bundled out Karnataka for 136. http://www.espncricinfo.com/indiandomestic2010/engine/current/match/471563.html This match was on Neo today and one pacer from Gujarat Ishwar Choudhary looked very impressive. Took 4/31, his best bowling figures so far. Was consitently bowling at around 134-135 kmph and getting the ball to swing in the air and off the pitch. Has a nice smooth action but is quite lean for a pacer. Another Gujarat bowler leg spinner Salil Yadav was impressive too.

Was Irfan Pathan ruled out for the rest of season, after that minor hamstring injury or did he play in any match after that? I can see that Baroda is not even in QF.

why are you thinking so much about Irfan? To me if he wants to play as a bowler then its impossible. He now needs to take the path of Ravi Shashtri and Jaysuriya who started as bowler and then became batting alrounders...He has more batting talent than bowling.

I'm thinking of Irfan the bowler because we don't really have bowlers. If he comes back to form after regaining fitness, that'll be fantastic for India. I'm not interested in his batting talent like a bits and pieces player.

To me, he was never an outstanding bowler...he just had a few good performance at the start, but he was never an international material....because he was too dependent on swing and helpful conditions...he more hype than anything else...I knew his fate as a bowler since his U19 days as he lacked pace and his record if you take out minnows is nothing to tell..... if you still think he can come and bowl like Akram or Zak than you are in an illusion. He has never had it in him to be as good as even Srinath or Zak forget about being an Akram. He can only survive in international cricket if he bats like a proper batsman as he has better technique than most of our young batsmen and bowls like Hopes or Watson do for Aussies...and that is it for him....

Re: your point on Irfan, he was an pretty good One Day bowler. For a long time he was a real threat with the new ball (in tests too as his MotM performance in Perth test 08 testifies). Also when he started his career and bowled promisingly in the test series in Aus about 7 or so years ago he was genuine fast medium, not FAST by any means but not bad. There was a spell under Greg Chappel when he was excellent with both bat and ball. Although yes he is far too reliant on helpful conditions and the new ball (like a lot of our pacemen). There is still a role for him in one day cricket as a bowler who can bat, not the other way round.

I do not think he can play as a bowler who can bat...because he cannot play as a third seamer if we have 3-1 combo or as a second seamer in 2-2 combo or a fourth bowler if we play 4 specialist bowlers especially in batting friendly co9nditions....He can play only as a fifth bowler as a filler and can also fill a place in the batting order at number 7 and right now he is 50 in batting and 50 in bowling....his bowling is not gonna improve much..because it is more of a natural talent which he does not possess...he has much more talent in batting in comparison to his bowling where he can improve a lot and become even better and a reliable middle order batsman... That is why I would advise him to go that way and become a medium pacer batting alrounder....who could bowl 5-6 overs every match...like Mathews, hopes, and Watson are for their teams If he will try to come back as a bowler I do not think he has any chance...we have quite a few good bowlers coming..selectors after this world cup must look for future fast bowlers...because guys like Nehra, Munaf, Pathan, RP are gone now and not gonna improve...Zak is at the end of his career...Sreeshanth is unreliable and Ishant needs to get his rhythm back...New bowlers wont do any worse than these tried and tested and if we can find one or two good bowlers out of those young bowlers...we should feel happy about it...I do not want to see likes of Nehra in the team after the world cup...

Jharkhand celebrates finest hour with first domestic trophy in cabinet Aditya Iyer Wed Mar 02 2011, New Delhi: With a golden cone switching young hands in rapid motion, they hared around the hoarding-void ground, screaming at empty yellow and blue seats. Their sounds may have echoed off the spectatorless Holkar Stadium in Indore but the voice of Jharkhand cricket was finally heard around the country. With the World Cup being played in the subcontinent, even the staunchest supporters of domestic cricket decided to give this one a miss, but nothing was going to stop 11 youngsters from celebrating their finest hour — Jharkhand’s first domestic title. As Shahbaz Nadeem and wicketkeeper Shiv Gautam tag-teamed to run-out Gujarat’s Ishwar Choudhary short of his crease, the first of the on-field celebrations began with the customary snatching of stumps. Jharkhand was also presented the Vijay Hazare Trophy for being the best one-day team in the domestic circuit. For a state that has never risen from the obscurity of the second tier in the Ranji Trophy, winning the limited-over equivalent is unparalleled. Nadeem collected his Man of the Match award for rattling out the opposition for 96, beaming the way he did while forging scintillating figures of 4/6 from four overs. The left-arm spinner was unreadable, three out of the four batsman he dismissed out for nought. The fourth, Amit Singh, was put out of his misery for 3. Ishank Jaggi, Jharkhand’s top-order batsman, scored a patient 58 on a pitch that witnessed an unprecedented seven ducks in the second innings. The Vijay Hazare is a tournament Jaggi won’t forget for a long time, top-scoring in the tournament with 346 runs (at 57.66 per innings) in seven matches — none of which Jharkhand lost. “With our track record, nobody gave us a chance before the tournament. I think we’ve changed the way the state will be seen now,” says Jaggi. To be fair to the critics, though, they weren’t wrong in writing the team off. Since the southern portion of Bihar was bifurcated to form a new state a shade over ten years back, Jharkhand has won just six of their 36 Ranji matches. The numbers are more shocking over the last five years — two wins in 25 matches. This year was no different as Jharkhand finished second last in their group, above the only team they managed to muster a win against — Tripura. Aaron bowled only 4 overs as it was a slow pitch ans spinners did the rest...Aaron bowled first change..He was quick, certainly very quick, batsmen were not even able touch his deliveries in both SF and final...Vidarbha batsmen got a quite a few bruises form him in SF. He is still young. He was pick of the bowler in QF against Mumbai. He could have picked a wicket in his first over if I am right...fielder dropped a simple catch..look at his record in List A matches 10 matches 18 wickets average 19, strike rate 26..not bad at all for a 21 year old...But my main concern is he is quick right, he can hop the batsmen right, he can beat the batsmen right, but he needs to learn very quickly how to set a batsman and pick up wickets by using his pace in unhelpful conditions...he bowled too short to my liking though was around 145 at most times...Bowled fastest at 153 and keeper was standing about 20-25 yards behind the stumps and was still carrying the ball at waist to shoulder height..which was worth noticing.. he must bowl a bit fuller on Indian pitches to get LBW and bowled and mixed his length with short balls...He was more accurate in SF where he hit a few batsmen on the knuckles and shoulder.... Whatever Akash Chopra said is acceptable and tons have been hit against every great fast bowler or genuine pacer in FC and international cricket..and that ton does not demean his potential...He is still very raw and has a lot to learn and if talking about pace only, in Vijay Hazaare trophy, he certainly looked 150K bowler...bowled quite a few balls at 144, 145, 146, 147K...and you don't need to see the speed guns every time to know he is bowling fast...those deliveries will make you believe that he is fast.... Though pace is not everything but its an important asset because everyone cannot be a McGrath or Zak who can do it without pace as most of the great pace bowler have all been genuine pacer to start their careers.... I hope this Vijay Hazaare trophy will be a big step ahead for him as selectors would have also been watching him...Now Deodhar trophy is starting this week and east zone has a game on March 7...just wait and watch if it is televised....he is the first Indian pacer who bowled over 150K in domestic circuit that is the biggest achievement for him and very encouraging......

WV Raman, the Bengal coach said during the semis when Varun bowled 144-145 that he is capable of bowling faster than that and has been extremely pacy throughout the domestic season and does swing the ball even at that pace if the conditions aid him. The potential is definitely there, needs to be groomed. Can't leave a 21 year old youngster on his own to learn the skills and sort his bowling out.
