May be because not long back he played the game himself representing India. It takes time I guess. Its his first stint if i am not much wrong.

Listening to him is like listening to radio commentary - he describes each and every delivery. TV commentators have to realise that the TV audience, unlike radio audience, is able to see everything thats happening on the field so there's no need for ball by ball description.
