Tendulkar says no to honorary doctorate

BANGALORE: Citing professional reasons, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is said to have turned down the honorary doctorate to be conferred on him by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS). Tendulkar is said to have told the RGUHS V-C, registrar and two syndicate members that he wasn't inclined to accept the varsity honour as he was still active in professional cricket. He said that he had declined similar honour from other universities abroad and respected the decision of the university to confer the title on him. The university is now awaiting an official regret letter from him, which will be forwarded to governor HR Bhardwaj, who is the chancellor of the university. The health varsity syndicate will meet on March 8 to discuss the issue. With Sachin declining the offer, some members say that the university might not confer honorary doctorate in this year's convocation. In a strange coincidence, two universities - RGUHS and University of Mysore - chose to honour the cricketer this year. The University of Mysore is yet to communicate to him their decision to honour him. The Times of India

Whats all the bruhaha about? Before I begin, SRT fans, this is not a dig at SRT. So don't over react :P A university decided to confer SRT with a doctorate on (presumably) Health Sciences for some unknown reasons. Being a batting maestro doesn't mean you should get a PHD on Health Sciences. And Sachin refused to accept this honorary 'honour' citing an even more ridiculous excuse. So what if he is still playing cricket? He doesn't have to go and attend lectures. He just has to pick up the degree scrolls. Ideally, this should be in WTF news of the day thread.

Can someone explain what is the point of these honorary doctorates. Is it just so the university itself gets more recognition?
Precisely. What better way to be in the news and to appeal to young students in India than award a doctorate to Tendulkar?

Yes, the reason given looks stupid, but we dont have a quote from Sachin and TOI reporters can be extremely stupid. Reporter: "Sachin, why did you say no to the doctorate?" Sachi: "See, I am a professional cricketer and I want to concentrate on cricket right now." Reporter goes back and writes a story: "Sachin rejects doctorate because he is a professional cricketer".

^ But the broader question still remains. Why did he refuse the doctorate?
He knows best. May be there are too many universities offering him doctorates and he has decided to stay away. Who knows what reasons he has?

It has been years since I last visited the Times of India website - my doctor has reported an exponential growth in my brain's processing power since then.

What did you want him to say instead ? Something like this : "Dude Iam a freakin sportsman and more importantly have my braincells and integrity intact to know that the degree you are trying to confer on me has jack sh!t to do with my profession ... hence kindle shove it where the sun dont shine" :hmmm:
So, you think Tendulkar considers himself worthy of an Air Commander title instead? :D

To start with the rank is a Group Captain and everyone knows that it is to promote the culture of serving the country amongst the yengsters and that the Indian Air Force is a far more honorable institution to associate with rather than the sadak chap Rajiv Gandhi University and lets not even talk about the cause.
I wasn't sure of the rank, but I guess that is immaterial. So promoting education is not important? :D
