Prakat Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Nothing wrong with sanga's captaincy. fielding was worst ever i have ever seen. If fielding standards can drop under pressure or just by itself for no reason that's a problem for the Captain and coach to handle or have addressed before the finals. That is still the captain's job. Look at India, the fielding standard rose on the day of the finals. Do you think that is a co-incidence that both these things happened on the same day?

Also, worth noting that Lanka's fielding was even worse against England in the quarter final - they dropped four chances. Fielding is also a discipline like batting or bowling.
CoverDrive Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Some very poor decision making. 1. Dropping Mendis for Randiv who was not even in the squad and last played an ODI in Nov. There is no justification for that. You already have an off spinner in your team (your back up part timer is also an offspinner) and then you go ahead and get another one dropping a guy who offers you most variety. SL fans maybe most sporting and forgiving but if I were them i would ask them this question. 2. Defensive approach while bowling. You can see Kohli and Gambhir were very nervous in the beginning but he still used Malinga so sparringly. Murali came in when Gambhir almost got his 50 (it was advantage India by then). I get the feeling Murali always hesitates to bowl in powerplay. Why do you want to keep your best bowlers so late. Especially when dew came later on and Murali could not complete his spell only. Even when Dhoni came he only got malinga for 1 over. 1 boundary and straightaway he removed him. That is very negative tactics. so he thought Perera Kula and DIlshan were going to win him the match?
vvvslaxman Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I do not think Murali was keen on bowling either. Not even seamers could grip the ball. Spinners would have struggled even more.
Sachin=GOD Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Murali, if completely fit, could have made a difference. I think he was not keen on bowling mainly because he was'nt 100% fit.
vvvslaxman Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Murali' date=' if completely fit, could have made a difference. I think he was not keen on bowling mainly because he was'nt 100% fit.[/quote'] Also a big disadvantage was Dhoni was batting. He knows Murali inside out. Infact he mentioned in the press as well after the win that he could read all his variations.
Square Drive Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I think we lost the match in the first 15 overs. The openers were too defensive in their approach because of the weak middle order. Normally SL openers score lot of their runs by hitting the bowl in th air, over the inner field. Even more conventional Tharanga do that. But in this final they were scared to lift the bowl in the air. Indian fielding also played a big part in that period because it had already shut down their first option that is hitting the bowl along the ground into gaps. In previous games Tharanga would have chipped it over the inner fielders when he couldn't find the gaps. Dilshan and Sanga were also not as fluent as they have been in the tournament. That negative approach and the poor innings of Samarawera (he should have played like Kula, at least) made the target 30/40 runs shorter. Simply it was a 300+ pitch. Sanga is not the best captain around but when ur team have certain limitations and yet ur expectations are too high, any captain will face a situation that he can't handle it anymore. I think Sanga had the biggest scare when we struggled to finish our SF against kiwis. Then he lost Mathews who is the only player that showed some promise as a middle order batsmen. So I don't blame Sanga. He has done tremendously well as a batsman and carried a lot of weight on his shoulders throughout the tournament. Even Mahela wasn't consistent enough in previous games. :(( + Sanga was great behind the stumps for us throughout the tournament. :winky:

vvvslaxman Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Sanga must have said to Dhoni "If you pull a knife i will pull a gun, if you pull out Sreesanth i will pull out Kapu" :hysterical: What a crappy batsman this Kapu is. He is their lower order big hitter. His average is 25 and strike rate is 75 :cantstop:

Sanga has this policy always. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn.t He just picks players who have decent records in recent times against a particular team. Randiv has an okay record against us. So is Perera.

Tigerbait Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I really don't think it would have made a differene. Dhoni was in the zone by that point.
singhprakash72 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Sanga did what most modern captains do...play safe instead of go for kill. So nothing unexpected but here I would differentiate Dhoni from Sanga ...he moved ahead of Yuvi...which in hindsight was great move but he got out in few deliveries it would have added pressure on Yuvi and the Team.
vvvslaxman Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 As i said before the match both teams are overly familiar about each others strength. India had better team for the given conditions. Sangu could have come out with any combination they would still have lost.
indiafan Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I think it was mainly due to Murli not feeling great and not able to grip the ball. Ultimately SL tried to bring in more batsman and bowling allrounders to shorten their tail. But the plan backfired as India bowled well and didnt allow them to post huge score. You may say that India gave away too many runs at the end. But, they didnt give away anything at the start, so SL had an average score in the end. They bowling was light and that hurt them big time.
Cricket Tragic Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Match was lost by then. In any case, Murali was not the best option for a number of reasons.
