South Africa skipper Graeme Smith is engaged to marry Irish singer and model Morgan Deane, a Cricket South Africa (CSA) official said on Tuesday. Smith flew to Ireland to pop the question after the Proteas' shock 49-run defeat to New Zealand sent them crashing out of the Cricket World Cup in March, according to CSA spokesman Michael Owen-Smith. “He became engaged on Sunday,†Owen-Smith said, adding that cricket officials would leave it to Smith to announce details of the couple's plans. Smith came under fire after the World Cup from South African fans who accused him of dodging the fallout of the Proteas' exit when he did not return home with the team after their quarter-finals loss. But Owen-Smith said the captain had special permission to skip the trip. “He was given permission by the team manager to do that. It was for personal reasons, and this obviously was the reason for it,†he said. Smith, 30, announced in 2010 he would give up his country's one-day captaincy after the World Cup, though he continues as Test skipper. Appointed captain at the age of 22, he has led South Africa in more Tests and one-day internationals than any other player. Deane, 25, is a model and singer who will be a backing vocalist for Irish pop band Jedward at the 2011 Eurovision song contest in Germany in May. - Sapa-AFP

:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: but even then his chances of winning the WC won't improve much - the English team is full of Saffers, so ultimately they will also choke :giggle:

Graeme Smith under fire for staying back in India to avoid tax

Already drawing flak for South Africa's early exit from the World Cup, outgoing cricket captain Graeme Smith has drawn more criticism for staying back in India even after the quarterfinal defeat to avoid paying income tax back home. Smith, currently in Ireland to visit his girlfriend pop star Morgan Deane, reportedly asked to stay on in India instead of facing the music with the rest of the side when it returned home last week. Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola said Smith's request had been sanctioned by the manager of the side. Teammate Faf du Plessis unwittingly sparked media interest in Smith's absence when he said on a radio station after returning home that the outgoing skipper had stayed on in India to meet requirements which would exempt him from paying income tax back home. South African residents, who are out of the country for at least 183 days of a tax year with 60 of them being consecutive days, gain exemption from paying tax here.
