John Buchanan was installed today as New Zealand Cricket's director of cricket, a role the 58-year-old will start in May. Buchanan will be the architect of the new high performance program, establish a consistent coaching philosophy across the country, implement a talent identification program and oversee the selection panel. "John's appointment is an exciting one for New Zealand Cricket. He has a great cricketing pedigree and will provide outstanding leadership as NZC look to move forward," said NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan. Buchanan, who was at the helm of the Australian side for eight years when they won three World Cup titles and at one stage won a record 16 Test matches in a row, said he was proud to accept the position. "It's an honour to be appointed to this challenging role. It is a wonderful opportunity to build on the work that has been done," said Buchanan. "New Zealand Cricket has a proud history and is a true honour to be given the responsibility. I want to be part of the next successful era and am committed to building sustainable high performance for New Zealand Cricket." Since retiring in 2007 the Queenslander has been a coaching ambassador in Australia, had a stint as coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders before he was sacked in June 2009 and more recently acted as a consultant to England as they prepared for the Ashes series against Australia.

Ummm why are people saying R.I.P to NZ team under this new Director? Under him Australia won 3 world cup matches and England won the Ashes series against Australia. However, KKR didn't do well at all under him.

Simon Doull: Too much change for my liking. It's been a very difficult time for New Zealand cricket both on and off the field. Some very strange appointments, which probably date back a little earlier than Buchanan. I was very surprised when he picked up the job. I still think he has coaching aspirations, and perhaps that was why he didn't get on too well with John Wright. If a guy of Wright's stature cannot get along with the director of cricket then there are some real issues. For many years, New Zealand Cricket have thought that as long as we get Australians involved, we'll get better. To me that is 100% wrong.

John Buchanan to leave New Zealand cricket

"Buchanan, who took up the role at NZC in May 2011, is disappointed to be leaving NZC at this time as he has enjoyed his work there. However, due to family circumstances, he has decided to return to Australia," the NZC release said. "Buchanan's return to Australia will give him the opportunity to explore other roles and consultancies with his business, Buchanan Success Coaching."
