Came close in 1985/86 :((
And in '78-79, '03-'04, and '07-'08. But Australia has always been a tough nut to crack for subcontinent teams. Even in their worst times of the 80s and the best times for Pakistan, Pakistan were not able to win there. In '07-08 I really thought we would do it, but Benson and Bucknor really screwed the series at Sydney.

Tbh in 1985-86 it was due to rain in MCG and Gavaskar slow batting in sydney. So that series was the closest we had come. http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/46/46716.html 8 runs 54 ball.

The rain came in the tea interval - Australia were bowling well and Gavaskar was shoring one end up. There is no way he could predict the rain would strike even though it was a forecast. If Symonds was given caught behind at Sydney at 160-7, we would have won the series - that's a more certain prediction than rain.

WTF! He got out as soon as India overhauled Australia's first innings score - the overall first innings run rate was 3 RPO which is acceptable even for today's game. You should give up on statsguru in order to tell me about matches I've actually followed.

OK . I was not even born then. So when did you feel that India would win this match . And how many overs were lost due to rain. I started following cricket from 1997.

India lost around 30 overs due to rain - the entire post tea session. It wasn't raining when they went in for tea and started deluging when it was time to resume. Chasing 120 or so in 60 overs should have been a cakewalk if it did not rain. PS : The MCG pitch was a lot different from what we see in the drop ins these days. It used to become literally unplayable at times in the last innings - look at the '80-81 series highlights on youtube where Kapil took a 5 for. After the mid 90s and the specially the drop in pitches at Melbourne in the 00s it has become a completely different game.

OK . Thanks for the info. Did you follow this match ? http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/63240.html Despite the fact that we were 1-0 behind, why didn't we go after run-chase when just another 9 runs were required. Or was it another negative tactics from England. I have watched that video of Kapil dev.

Of course India went for the chase - guess how many overs England bowled in the last 1 hour slot of mandatory overs in which they were supposed to bowl 15 - 8 or 10. Read this article from Gaurang to know what really happened in that test (I was too young to know at the time) : http://www.cricketnetwork.co.uk/main/s119/st61906.htm

Winning in Australia and South Africa will be a great great achievement. But infront of world cup, nothing would be matched. World cup brings the whole country together, Cricket wise, we would have definately played much hard cricket and strong cricket if we would win a test series in either of the 2 countries. But pressure wise, nothing can match the pressure which was on the team during INdia-Pakistan semi final game. The whole country wants you to do well. Never in the past there was this much pressure like there was during the semi final game against pakistan. The buildup to it was amazing. To me and also as sachin said, it's the biggest achievement of INdian cricket. We can win in Australia and South Africa, but nothing would match a world cup victory

Have to wait for another 4 years for another crack at SA and the seniors might all be gone (SRT, Dravid, Laxman, Zaheer, Sehwag....). The core of the test team certainly will be. 130/6 in the 3rd test :banghead: Best chance to win in Australia. I hope that it happens this time. So close on previous occasions.

World cup...you think India will come to a stand still if they win the upcoming test series in England? You think the prime ministers, Aamir Khan, 1 Lakh tickets for seats in a ODI series or test series? Its clearly winning the world cup.
