Is Rahul Dravid an automatic selection for Tests ?

He is arguably one of our all time greats and I was backing him for SA tour. But after having seen him in that series, I am not sure whether his game is ready for big challenge in England. I am a huge fan of his and would want to see him go on a high.

He has been playing on his reputation for past 3 years... He plays so defensively that he digs a hole for himself.. Last RSA tour was the final nail... We need new nurture Pujara/Badri/Kohli now

The problem with Dravid hasn't been bad form but his lack of ability to score runs against good attacks, especially overseas. He has failed in every overseas tour since SA in 2006/07 (other than NZ in 2009-didn't convert starts even there). Last hundred outside India was in 2006 (ex Bang). He will still score runs against the weaker teams like he did against NZ before the SA tour (or at home against SL but failing away in 08 and 10). I think he will bash the WI but I'm not confident that he can do it in England.

tbh I think his reflexes are beginning to slow down, he is 33 now (??) Struglled vs Steyn in SA. I think its the right time for the change to be made. Particularly against the moving ball in Eng, Im not sure how hell cope vs Anderson as an opener

Dravid's decline started exactly from the series in which Tendulkar made his comeback after his shoulder surgery in late 2006. The bloke averages below 40 since then in Test cricket.

No, I am big fan of Dravid, but he has to make the way for youngsters. 1) Sehwag 2) Gambhir 3) Pujara 4) Tendulkar 5) Laxman 6) Kohli 7) Dhoni Thats good for future, by the time Tendulkar and Laxman leave, Pujara and Kohli will get enough experience.

i certainly think that he will retire if he fails in the west indies tour. Though i dont think that we have a good enough replacement for RD @no.3 Specially when we are playing in England & Australia.

^ Lax is the best # 3 we can have. When Rahul leaves, in fact even now, Lax should be our regular # 3 and Rahul can come at 5 or 6. When Rahul leaves we can have Virat in provided Badri is already in the team.

Give him a farewell series. And even if he were 45, I'd pick him over batsmen who can't play bouncers.
