Abolish Ranji Trophy: Gavaskar

Gavaskar said that if selectors only cared about IPL performances and didn't reward players who did well through the FC season, they should abolish the Ranji trophy. Sunny appeared really pissed off when asked if some unknown players (don't remember the names) should get picked for India after the IPL. :cantstop: If a player has performed in both formats, there is no problem.

Wasn't he the one who had a go at team selection coz they selected Badani ahead of his son even though Badani scored loads in FC? But I agree that you can't select players solely based on IPL performances but in case a player is performing well across the board then IPL can push him ahead.

Ranji trophy surely needs to be modified though. I am all for 5 day instead of 4. Teams are making it boring draws and playing for first inning lead, rite from the start of day 1. I think an extra day will be handy here.

Ranji trophy is useless. There is hardly any decent wickets. Everytime I check the scores...the wicket is dead...with 1 team scoring 600+ & other team just trying to overtake that score..& points are settled based on who got the 1st innings lead. Used to watch & even go to Ranji games. Lost interest in the last few year....when I realized all the sugar coating BCCI do for domestic games are just that. Once they force the teams to looks for result...& force the groundsman for produce equal wickets for both batsman & bowler...Ranji will be just a useless FC structure. IMO...BCCI is now using Ranji as a feeder & to identify potential players for their 6 weeks of multi-millon dollars profit generator yearly IPL & followed by CL tournaments. Gavaskar also is a hypocrite. He continuously lower his standards to make money....& then ask questions to BCCI selectors. LOL

The BCCI and selectors are picking the team to play for the country. Their actions have a huge impact on the team, young players, supporters etc. Gavaskar making money does not affect Indian cricket. When did Sunny ask the BCCI not to male money? This isn't about money but about selection.

This isn't about money but about selection.[/quote'] Sunny as asking BCCI not to consider IPL performance. Why not. The selectors will sit down to select the team for WI T20 & ODI series. The players are playing in IPL...which is also domestic & brings much higher pressure then Ranji. I m not telling that selectors should ignore Ranji...but eg..Rahul Sharma is bowling very very good in IPL. So why not select him to for atleast WI T20/ODI leg. Another name that comes to mind is Manoy Tiwari. Now...even if they didnt do very good in Ranji...but they are hot & in form at the present....& IMO should be selected.

:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: Tiwari went on the A tour of England and got exposed badly. Amre was critical of his attitude and technique. So you'll ignore that and bring him in because he hit some useless trundler for a six? That Sharma kid has a bowling average of 44 in FC cricket. If he was so freaking awesome, why has he played only 9 games in 5 years?

We are talking abt Indian cricket. There are lot of players that had also played for India....who are worst then both the players above.

So? Our aim is to get better. We're the ****ing world champs and the number 1 test side. Breaking into the team should be tough. You can't gift caps to guys who hit a couple of sixes. I want to see a youngish team tour the WI for the ODIs but only people who deserve to get picked. Picking jokers out of the circus league (S Tiwary and Manpreet Phony) is not what I want to see.

Lot of youngsters must be busy modifying their game to suit T20 format. IPL is a short cut. You can play for years in domestic and yet go unnoticed. But in IPL you can be shot into limelight out of nowhere. Not everyone will have the drive to get into national side as a Test player. Ranji trophy is the only one first class tournament that can help us identify potential future players for the Test. One difference though is, those days test players would play in Ranji Trophy when they got time. These days with cramped schedules they hardly find any time. So lot of players would grow without any guidance like before.

Morkel is a Useless Trundler?

Sunny may be a hypocrite but he's right about what he said. More weightage needs to be given to perf in 4-day matches than to piece-of-crap IPL tournament.

I am all for the likes of Badrinath, Vijay, Rahane, Rayudu, Uthappa etc. get into the team for WI as they have done the hard yards in FC but I don't want to see the likes of Valthatty in the team just because he hit a few 6s and played a couple of good innings in a T20 tourney. Getting an India cap has to be much tougher than that and you can't ignore the likes of Badrinath and Rahane as it will send a very negative message to youngsters, i.e. play a couple of T20 innings and you are in.

No wonder why we keep producing batsmen and not bowlers. Who would want to bowl on those roads for 4 days? Looking at some of the pitches in this IPL...these are the wickets that are needed...with some pace, bounce and turn.

Ranji trophy should follow what County cricket have done. change to point system to go for win in the pool stages - they award something like 3 point for innings lead but 15 for outright win. though i don't know what you will do in the knockouts - maybe all the knockouts should be 5 days

Gavaskar is right. We will set a dangerous precedent of selecting people based on T20 format. It is just 4overs or 10-15 Over batting. In international cricket players need stamina, fitness level and the longer format give the perfect idea on these parameters. IPL surely gives limelight but they should not fall for that
