The other day, Gilly was saying in the post-match press-conference after the match against Mumbai that he had his heart in his mouth when Kieron Pollard took that stunning catch to dismiss Shaun Marsh, who was batting beautifully. He said all it takes was one ball to change the complexion of one over and one over to change the complexion of a T20 game. And that’s exactly what Aswhin does for csk. He’s a game-changer. He often comes on to bowl when the opposition team is 45 for no loss after 4 or 30 for no loss after 3, but invariably goes only for 5-6 runs. That immediately changes the tone of the game, shifting the pressure back on to the batsmen. And when pressure builds, mistakes happen, chances are created and wickets fall, which is pretty much the underlying mantra of CSK’s bowling plan. And he does this, almost every single game! $8,50,000 is a steal for this guy. Why the other franchizes didn’t aggressively bid for him, I have no idea.
fineleg Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Even in Intl ODIs - most of the time he is bowling in Powerplay or when opposition is having a good start. So, he is a useful bowler under tough conditions. You are right in saying 'Numbers quite dont tell the full story'

Lets see after 20-30 ODIs how he continues to perform, especially in conditions which are not conducive to spin. We've had a lot of promising youngsters only to be disappointed later. Hope Ashwin isnt one of them

Hope Ashwin isnt one of them Did you see him bowl in Champions league last year,he was the highest wicket taker there as well and it was played in SA.When it comes to proving himself at intl. level ,for some unknown reasons Dhoni doesnt show faith in him and doesnt play him in intl. cricket. He performed very well in the limited matches he has played so far.He has enough variations to trouble any batsman and most importantly he doesnt resort to darts when someone attacks him :winky:.

Till Harbhajan is there, I doubt Ashwin will be a first choice spinner... Dhoni doesnt want to play two specialist off spinners in the squad especially when we have Yuvi, Raina/Yusuf too.

The difference between the top (Ashwin) and the bottom ( Yuvraj) is not even 1 run per over. So, in a T20 game, where both bowlers bowl 4 overs, Ashwin gives away 4 runs lesser than Yuvraj. That is it. Is that a match winning statistic? Just a difference of ( under) 4 runs? Is this a better indicator than Average?

And while they are just below Ashwin in Eco, by a margin of less than 2/10th of a run, in Average they are better than Ashwin. So is Ashwin still the match winner? I don't get this logic.

Malinga is the best T20 bowler in the world and Rahul Sharma has been outstanding in this IPL (but Ashwin has been superb over a longer period). If Rahul Sharma keeps bowling this well then he and Ashwin will be in the same category. I don't think Ashwin's average does his ability as a T20 bowler justice.

Ashwin is the match winner because he gets crucial wickets for his team,bowls tight spells which creates pressure on the opposition team .Its about how much you contribute in your team's success which judges your match winning abilities and if we take that into account,Ashwin is a big match winner for CSK. P.S:Rahul Sharma doesnt bowl in powerplay overs.

The moot question now is can he he be the match winning spinner we are looking for in tests? He did show in the last domestic season that in first class matches, without using too many variation, he had the temprament to bowl classical off spin in longer spells. Hopefully all this success in IPL , domestic cricket and shorter formats of the game gives him enough confidence to develop as Bhajji's proper replacement in due course of time.
