More dimensions of the gigantic 2G spectrum scam are coming out into the open with media disclosures about certain decisions of Union textiles minister Dayanidhi Maran and the favours companies owned by his family allegedly received in return for those decisions. Maran was the Union communications minister during the period 2004-07 before A Raja assumed charge of the ministry. Raja’s wrongful allocation of 2G spectrum and DMK MP Kanimozhi’s role in it have been widely discussed and are being investigated. Both are in jail. According to the latest disclosures, Maran too had misused his office, caused losses to the public exchequer and made illegal gains from his actions as a minister. The crux of the charges is that Maran had allocated 2G licences cheaply to a telecom company Aircel after it was taken over by a Malaysian group, Maxis, which later made heavy investments in Sun Direct TV Pvt Ltd, a company owned by the Maran family. Aircel had earlier been denied a licence on flimsy grounds and was forced to sell itself to the Malaysian group, probably according to a well-laid plan. FDI norms in the telecom sector were changed and the power to decide the spectrum price was taken away from a group of ministers to the ministry on his own demand. These were allegedly to facilitate the arbitrary and questionable allotment. The modus operandi was similar to what Raja later adopted. The Rs 700 crore investment made by the Malaysian company in the Sun group media company is similar to the Rs 200 crore received by Kalaignar TV from a beneficiary of Raja’s largesse. An affidavit filed in the Supreme Court has sought a CBI probe into Maran’s role in the scam. Maran has made a blanket denial of the charges but the denial sounds very much like the refutations and protestations of innocence made by Raja when the 2G scandal broke out. He has not been able to deny the specific charges and there is prima facie much to be explained. The response of the Congress party that the joint parliamentary committee, which is investigating the 2G spectrum scandal, can extend the scope of its inquiry into these charges is inadequate. Maran has no option but to quit until his name is cleared. On one side we can argue that politicians who have business interests in the field have a greater understanding of it and can present a vision for long term improvement. On the other hand, it also can be argued that such cases can make politicians twist policy decisions to favor their businesses especially when they are of the scale of Sun group or Sharad Pawar's empire. Conflict of Interest alone cant be used as a factor to determine a politican's eligibility for a ministry. Raja was a pathetic telecom minister yet managed to outdo Maran in the size of the scams he perpetrated without any conflict of interest. Maran though equally crooked, didnt do a bad job of managing the ministry. What is needed is a set of checks and balances to make sure any crucial ministerial decisions are scrutinised by a larger group of ministers, to avoid such unilateral and arbitrary policy changes like the flawed 2G auction. There is a system already put in place in the UPA government, but coalition compulsions force them to turn a blind eye to this robbery (not that their ministers are clean themselves).

Now he hasn't got as much clout as he earlier had. Since the DMKs' huge loss in TN elections Karunanidhi's problems have increased tremendously. He's getting old so now there's going to be a succession war between Stalin and Azhagiri and thats going to hurt everyone in the party.

His daughter being implicated in the scam was a pre-election arrangement where the Govt. and Karuna agreed to a big DMK/family head being sacrificed. If they had waited they could probably have gotten him instead in case there was enough political will at the center.

He's too old to be sent to jail and even if the Govt had tried to do so then there would've been very, severe protests by the DMK.

I mean anyone? :WTF: I am stunned at the sheer brazen nature of these crooks. I am also ashamed that they these specimens come from the same part of the country that I do. What were they thinking? That they could just go on with their swindling mission and no one will either notice, or even if they did, wont care? Our system is so broken, its so hard to stay positive and keep faith. You get depressed sometimes just thinking about our politics.

The Karunanidhi clan was always doing catching up..Since the Karunanidhi clan are not smooth operators, they got caught first. And now Marans will to get investigated. Do you know why they have always wanted the surface transport ministry? :winky: or later telecom or textiles? I can tell you the storie sbehind the operations these guys run in each one of those cabinets. They are very very smart and in a certain way you have to be Tamil to understand what they are at. :winky:
