I personally feel "8" will take at least 2 more years to come... and trends are changing bit too rapidly now... tablets and XYZ-Pads are getting more and more stronger, so only in few years from now, not only "mouse" but even notebooks will be in danger... but Yes Desktops will stay long, so I guess for 8 whole new interface for Pads and "classical 7" interface for Desktops will work best...

Sachin=GOD Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Not impressed. Looks like Windows Mobile 7 + Windows Media Center = Windows 8 :headshake: Also, as others have said, it looks like its designed primarily as a touch UI which may not be very suitable for desktops.

It looks like next year will be filled with touchscreen laptops in the market and they might overtake the normal laptops. So, I am not sure how the market would go. Anyways a touchscreen laptop would never be as friendly for professional work compared to a traditional one. Nothing can replace a keyboard and mouse for heavy professional work.

In fact, it's not even properly designed for simple touch screen use.

But I am saying that it is but obvious that next year would see a lot of price decrease as well as touchscreen laptops flooding the market as Windows 8 is mainly optimized for touch though it will also work with traditional mouse and keyboard. I think they will make it fast because MS has to keep up with the touch age.

Windows 8 beta release will take place in a few months if my calculations are correct and the public stable release would be later next year IMO. I dont think they will try to do too fast. It has been less than 2 years since the last Windows 7 release and they would not try to do it too fast this time. But manufacturers will be flooding touchscreen laptops by the start of next year I suppose as they would want to take advantage of the market before the Windows 8 release. Hopefully that will decrease the price of touchscreen laptops due to competition till the later part of the year. Windows 8 will run on ARM too though mainly for tablets. ARM manufacturers like TI, Qualcomm and Nvidia have already announced ARM chips which will support Windows 8. So, the market is moving fast for sure and every manufacturer is trying to take the advantage. Though ARM would be mainly for tablets but they even showed a laptop using ARM chip and Windows 8 in the Microsoft official presentation at Taiwan a few days ago. ARM manufacturers are already jumping into the competition and so it is but natural that laptop manufacturers will also jump the bandwagon very soon and hopefully release a lot of touchscreens by the start of next year.

All it needs is a computer with a motion sensor. yup. the script uses the sensor that tells the hard drive heads to retract when it detects rapid acceleration - to protect data when the laptop falls from a height - and triggers the desktop switch or app switch or whatever. I still use it to swap between my work desktop and music quickly. pretty cool hack for what was meant to be a serious widget.
