While the fake Baba got all the attention for his circus ,the real baba who was in the same hospital at the same time as the attention ***** baba ,dies after fasting for over 100 days.:(( Sadhu dies fasting to save Ganga, Jairam blames Uttarakhand govt NEW DELHI/DEHRADUN: Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday blamed the Uttarakhand government for the death of the seer of Haridwar-based Matri Sadan Ashram, Swami Nigamanand, who was on fast for nearly four months against quarrying in river Ganga. The minister also warned the mining mafia of strict action. After battling for his life for 42 days at the ICU in Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), Dehradun, the 35-year-old crusader for 'Save Ganga', Swami Nigamanand, died on Monday afternoon at 2.30 pm. The Swami was allegedly poisoned at a Haridwar district hospital by a section of land mafia for daring to oppose their activities. Responding to the media queries about the Swami's death, Jairam Ramesh said he had sent a letter to Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal on January 6 last year, asking him to take steps to end illegal sand mining in the stretches of River Ganga at Haridwar. "I have spoken to the chief minister on a number of occasions that illegal mining is rampant in Uttarakhand... That illegal mining enjoys political patronage in the highest levels. Unfortunately, no action was coming from the state government over the last 15 or 16 months," he said. "In view of the fact that the state government has demonstrated a continued reluctance to take action against illegal mining, I think, we will have no option but to invoke Section 5 of the Environment Protection Act and take action on our own." the minister warned. Illegal stone quarrying and mining are rampant along the 80km Ganga stretch from Munni-Ki-Reti to Rishikesh in Tehri district and further to Laksar town in Haridwar. The Save Ganga crusader, a seer at Haridwar's Matri Sadan Ashram, had been on a fast-unto-death since February 19. On April 27, officials shifted him to Haridwar district hospital as his condition deteriorated. But he refused to touch food. Nigamanand slipped into a coma on May 2. He was then rushed to HIMS where he was put on life support system. Dr Vijay Verma, a close aide of Swami Nigamanand and president of Haridwar Citizen Council, alleged Swami Nigamanand suffered a heart attack at Haridwar district hospital after being injected poison by hospital staff, who worked in collusion with the land mafia. On May 15, a Matri Sadan's functionary, Brahamchari Dayanand, lodged an FIR at Haridwar Kotwali naming a member of a stone-crusher association and a senior doctor for poisoning the Swami. Matri Sadan Ashram has accused the local police of succumbing to the pressure of mining lobby and dragging its feet to arrest those named in FIR. In view of these accusations, Haridwar district magistrate R Meenakshi Sundaram has said that an autopsy of the Swami would be conducted. The Uttarakhand government had on December 10, 2010 banned quarrying and stone-crushing along the Ganga as the entire region is eco-sensitive. However, the association of stone-crushers in Haridwar managed to get a stay on the government order. On May 27, a two judge bench of the Uttarakhand HC vacated the stay on a special leave petition filed before it by Matri Sadan. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Sadhu-dies-fasting-to-save-Ganga-Jairam-blames-Uttarakhand-govt/articleshow/8852626.cms

It's amazing to see how BJP and RSS didn't come out to support this low profile poor baba on quarrying in river Ganga which is a sacred river in Hinduism but instead went chasing high profile Rich Baba Ramdev for his stance against corruption.

Beetle I am not sure why you have this much vitriol for Baba Ramdev? Does him belonging to the saffron right disqualify him from raising important issues like corruption? I personally dont like Ramdev, but its important not to discard the message by seeing the messenger. The issue of corruption is much bigger than Ramdev or Hazare. The government is not afraid of these individuals, it is afraid of the huge outpouring of public support for their causes. The raising of public awareness on corruption makes them not take corruption as inevitable. It makes them demand accountability for public money

When you stand behind wrong people you give them strength .This man calls himself a yogi and has amassed thousands of crores in property in the name of donations. What kind of yogi does that ? You know someone else who has amassed such wealth from donations....Mayawati.This baba belongs to the category of Mayawati. This man recently made the worth of his trusts public but refused to answer questions regarding the worth of his companies. Why? What kind of yogis invest money in food parks and run transport companies? Just because he is lending his voice to a just cause does not mean we support such people .How is he any different from Mayawati and lalu ?Would you support an anti corruptin cause by these two?Would that make any sense? The only difference is that you haven't seen this man in government. He is aiming to be a politician(officially) and if he comes to power what kind of politician do you think he will be?This man is so untrustworthy without being in power ,has amassed so much wealth and is already so notorious......just imagine him as a politician in power. People who are standing behind cannot vouch for his intentions. This man had a back door agreement with the same govt that he claims to be fighting against and the next day he went back on that agreement too. People are just creating another corrupt power hungry politician by supporting him. I don't get the argument about supporting just about anybody as long as the cause is just.

Absolutely. I think you explained the difference between a Normal Yogi Baba and Baba Ramdev perfectly. The Baba died without any media interaction for a social cause without much supporters. He didn't break his fast even after it started affecting his health, and seeing no one supportive from the other end, he never shied away and continued fasting. This Baba Ramdev says he isn't afraid of dying for hi country, then whey the **** did he break his fasts seeing no response from the Government ? If he was true to his words, he would die for the country's sake. This act of his clearly shows how well he fulfills his promises and how true he is to his words. Not trustworthy at all and his fasting will have no impact on India, he hasn't done an inch for the country with his fasting and his so called "movement" turned out to be an epic :fail:. A man who died peacefully, without much public support is definitely the REAL BABA if you ask me. :hatsoff: to him for his spectacular efforts.

BTW, a $1 billion project has been approved for cleaning the Ganga over the next 10 years - wonder how much is going to be actually spent on the project and how much will be pocketed :

NEW DELHI — Indian officials signed an agreement with the World Bank on Tuesday to use a $1 billion loan to finance the first major new effort in more than 20 years to cleanse the revered Ganges, one of the world’s dirtiest rivers. One-third of India’s 1.2 billion people live along the banks of the 1,560-mile-long river, many of them relying on it for drinking, cooking and washing. Millions more visit for ritual baths to cleanse themselves of sin. But untreated sewage, agricultural runoff and industrial waste have fouled its waters for decades, and hydroelectric projects and dams threaten to choke off its waters in spots. On Tuesday, a religious leader on a hunger strike over the effect of illegal mining on the state of the river, Swami Nigamanand, died after spending weeks in a coma.. The long-awaited loan is part of a government project that aims to halt the discharge of untreated wastewater into the river by 2020. The project, founded in 2009, replaced the 1986 Ganga Action Plan, the last large-scale attempt to address the pollution. That initiative was able to introduce waste water treatment in certain areas, it failed to halt raw waste disposal into the Ganges. Critics said it was inadequately financed and poorly managed. Indian officials and representatives of the World Bank said Tuesday that they hoped the new project would be more successful. They cited the greater amount of money being invested, the broader focus on regional environmental health and a planned public education campaign. “What we’re trying to do is take a step back and not look at just one sector — waste water — but take a larger sectoral approach,” said Genevieve Connors, a water resources specialist for the World Bank who is involved in the project. But she noted that the task of cleaning a river was enormous, saying it “takes decades and costs hundreds of billions of dollars.” Indian officials acknowledge that the Ganges is just one of many rivers that present public health problems. “Most of India’s rivers have become sewers,” said the environment minister, Jairam Ramesh. “We have to now really bring water into rivers.” Japan helped to finance a cleanup project in the Yamuna River, the largest tributary to the Ganges, in 1993. But that project has largely failed to make a dent in the river’s pollution.

1/3rd of India's 1.2 billion people live along Ganga :hmmm:
UP, Bihar, and West Bengal = 400 million people. Obviously, the writer meant the Gangetic plain and not people literally sitting on the banks of the river.

Beetle, I am not sure I understand your stance here. So what if Baba Ramdev has amassed wealth form donations? These are voluntary donations from his followers world over. Completely legal money ( at least from the looks of it), he hasn't gotten the money from indulging in criminal activities. There is no question of comparing him to Lalu Yadav or Mayawati, For all practical purposes, their money was earned by dubious methods and spent even more dubiously. Why should you hold it against a Baba if he invested in food parks or ran transportation businesses? He is generating employment doing that. And does it contravene the Yogi code of conduct? What exactly is wrong in what he is doing? Irrespective of his flaws, the cause that he stood up for is a noble one. That much credit Baba Ramdev deserves.

Yes indeed. The cause is a noble one. So what ? Even Anna Hazare Ji is fighting for a very noble cause, even the Baba that died fought for a noble cause. If he were fighting for a not so noble cause, he wouldn't have got any responses from the media persons or from the public. The fact that it was a noble cause, made him popular. He used to talk about the black money in his "Yoga Shivirs" and divert the minds of people towards him and make them support him. He expressed his views by polishing facts which were totally wrong. Also, the man speaks a lot. He is not at all true to his words. He has spoken many a times that "I am not afraid of death, and if I were to die for the sake of the country, I shall do the needful happily". After making such statements, he was found moving out of his comfort zone, hidden amongst hundreds of women covering him, dressed in a "Salwaar Suit" and hiding as if he will be condemned to death for his valiant efforts (or at least he calls them so :P). My question is "Why can't the movement be a simple one ? A Yoga Guru breaking his fast after 8 days, when a Non Yoga Guru fasted for over a 100 days fighting for not as big a cause as this man. So he should have continued fasting if he really cared for the nation. It was all media hogging and attention seeking initiative to gain immense popularity as a Hero of the movement. But soon all his dreams shattered as the people understood the politics he was playing with them. I want you to answer some questions now : 1) Why did he continued fasting even after he signed an agreement with The Government, saying nothing to the public about it. He was exposed later on, but why was all this done when you know that he was fighting for the nation and not for himself ? 2) Why did he hid himself amongst hundreds of women, dressed in woman's attire and marching as if he was sh!t scared of government ? He was fighting for a noble cause for the people of India, so why was he scared of the Government's action ? If he would have died (God forbid), he would have died for a very noble cause for the sake of India and its billion people, Oh Sorry 1.21 Billion people to be precise and this was what he said when asked. 3) Why does he not come in politics, improve the system and bring on his "Non Corrupt" leaders and politicians ? He can't actually because no one is "Pure" including the man himself. 4) Why was he challenging the Government and bragging about his wealth ? It was totally unnecessary. May be he was talking about the Monetary Powers he has. But if he cares so much, he should be spending the money on the poor and taking an initiative to alleviate hunger. He AFAIK, sells his own brands of herbs, medicines, drugs and other health care products with a staggering profit margins just like any other foreign enterprise. So he should be spending all his money to benefit for the poor instead of earning more. Why does he not do that when his statements shows that he cares so much for India and for the poor ? 5) Why was he talking sh!t about the "Videshi Kampaniyaan desh ko loot rahi hai" banner and "Swadeshi Apnao", driving people nuts ? Clearly, its not that his products are cheap and affordable by everyone. The globalized economy has so many merits, that it outclasses all its demerits. But the way he portrayed the same was mind boggling. He included fake statistics as a tool to misguide people and make them aware of a nonsensical statement (which he calls a fact), that Indians are looted by the Government and the Foreign Companies. They indulge is price hike, materialism, black marketing, corruption and all sorts of economic BS that generates more money. Yes, they are forced to do all this , because they aren't getting money easily through donations, are they ? Answer all these questions so that I, and in fact everyone is convinced that Baba Ramdev is the Real Baba.
