rkt.india Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 Former Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee is back in the city on the second of his three annual coaching stints at the MRF Pace Foundation here. Addressing the press on Wednesday, Lillee said he was impressed with India's most promising set of pacemen that is currently undergoing training at the Foundation. The group includes 21-year-old Varun Aaron — the Delhi Daredevils strike bowler who impressed with his speed in IPL 2011. “Varun has worked really hard on his fitness, strength and flexibility, which are the hallmarks of a good fast bowler. The final phase of training is the mental aspect and I think Varun is ready to move to the next level,†said Lillee. Varun's grip The legendary Aussie said he had, in conjunction with Chief Coach M. Senthilnathan, corrected a minor anomaly in Varun's grip on Wednesday. “He was holding the fingers too hard on the ball. The grip should be firm, but it should also be relaxed so that the wrist can do its work. You need the separation between the fingers adjacent to the seam,†he said. rkt.india Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 Yesterday I watched a footage of him and Jeff Thomson bowling together in a Gabba test versus England in 1974-75 on youtube and wow what a bowling pair that was. Batters were looking clueless against their pace, wetting their pants, and still I cannot blame batsmen when facing these kind of bowlers on a Gabba pitch without any protection as they were hit right and left by short stuff.

And from the previous era, the likes of Debashish Mohanty, Vivek Razdan, Subroto Bannerjee, Tinu Yohanan etc. Granted not all of them turned out to be long term prospects but at least we had a good stream of decent pacers and which kind of laid the foundation for some very good pacers to come through the ranks.

Lillee must! WISDEN described the duo of Lillee and Thomson as the most fearsome in Test cricket history.

They come, they impress, they get praises from everyone and then they disappoint.
