hitman1980 Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Mumbai: The inclusion of Srikkanth Anirudha, son of Krishnamachari Srikkanth in the squad of Emerging Players which would be touring Australia next month has come as a surprise for many and questions are being raised on the selection panel headed by Krish Srikkanth. This is Srikkanth’s last year as head of the selection panel. The BCCI’s senior selection committee had on Saturday picked the squad for India’s Emerging Players squad which will play a series of three-day games in Australia next month. The Tamil Nadu opener who is a part of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings has had a dismal Ranji season as he could only manage 251 runs from 9 innings which was nowhere near the top scores for the season. Overall his First class average stands at 29.45 and being an opener, these figures are nothing to boast about. He generally is an attacking player and is said to be suited for T20 format. But even here his stats fail to impress. With his IPL franchise, CSK his scores are 3, 7,9, 0, 64, and 0. Interestingly, Srikkanth Anirudha did not even feature in the Tamil Nadu first XI regularly last season and when he was selected for the Challengers Trophy last year without even appearing for a single List A fixture, many eye brows were raised. The trend of nepotism and favouritism in Indian cricket is nothing new as there have been various such instances in the past. The likes of Udit Patel and Stuart Binny, sons of Brijesh Patel and Roger Binny respectively who held high positions in Karnataka Cricket are some notable examples. But such biasness has lead to lose of opportunity for many talented and supremely skilled performers in the domestic circuit. The selectors overlooked another opener in the form of 22-year old Jharkhand opener, Ishan Jaggi who had impressed everyone amassing 522 runs in the longer version and averaging a stellar 57 in limited over version. Compare this stat to that of Srikkanth Anirudha one can clearly make out on who deserves a place in Emerging players squad. The Emerging Players tournament will have three-day matches as opposed to limited-over matches as in previous years. India`s campaign at the tournament starts with a match against South Africa from August 1. They will then play New Zealand from August 6, and Australian Institute of Sports (AIS) from August 11. Does Srikkanth believes that if he's not there, his son's nacent career will be doomed? Will Srikkanth in this extended tenure see through his son of all the "difficulties" and sort out his career?

Was Sunny India's selector ever and chose his son in such developmental squads? I can't remember. Can you point out the instance? In fact I think this is much similar to Arjun Yadav, Stuart Binny, Udit Patel and such cases and Srikkant has taken it a step further being the national selector. I'm glad that more and more news papers are reporting it. In the one-dayers, he was 27th on the list with 210 runs. He scored a couple of 50s for Tamil Nadu and one half-century for Chennai Super Kings at the IPL. BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, who is also the convenor of the selection committee meeting, refused to comment on the issue. “I don’t speak on selection matters,†he said. “All I can say is that there was a consensus on his selection,†said Srikkanth. Incidentally, this is the final year of the Srikkanth-led panel’s term. But beyond the committee there were many who didn’t agree with the decision, as they named several players who surprisingly failed to make the cut despite having a far superior record than Anirudha. “He shouldn’t have been there in a team that is to play three-day games. Anirudha’s style suits the T20 format, but even there he isn’t quite the top run-getter. Younger players with more potential have scored more than him,†said an official of a state unit whose player was overlooked. Why Anirudha’s selection makes for an interesting debate is because most players in the 15-member side seem to have earned their call-up the hard way — with piles of runs in the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy. What makes this worse is that he and Dhawan are the only two openers in the squad. Hope Rahane opens and Srikkanth dosent come close to featuring Its disgraceful
