Even Plato used it with socrates as his focal point of discussion.

He is very often the writer's proxy in the story. The shapeshifting prankster who reveals truths through his seemingly frivolous acts. Krishna too shares a lot of these qualities. It's the preferred role for Kader Khan when he acts in a movie he's scripted.
