this thread is going off topic. The original post is very valid, we would know how good we are when we lose Laxman, Dravid and Tendulkar. I hope we can find good replacement, for that we need careful planning. Someone has to be given long run, it takes a while to get settled into Test cricket. Laxman took a while to become great player that he is. He was once called Domestic Bully.

why should a decent ODI player not to be worshipped? Last time I check 50-50 is still type of cricket and Dhoni was number 1 batsman there for some time. Why can't he be worshipped for being great leader of the team?? I think you are just too drunk. Dhoni is not the problem. Dhondy, I landed in India around 3 weeks back for a lengthy break - the country is mad with Dhoni mania. I drive around Lucknow, Varanasi, and Delhi and I see Dhoni staring down on me when I am trying to find out which road I am on. Dhoni? Seriously? WTF? At least the earlier mania we had in the cricketing nation was about top quality cricketers like Gavaskar, Kapil, Tendulkar. Dhoni? WTF! The guy is a hack of a wicket keeper - the only reason he doesn't have a Kamran Akmal kind of record of dropped catches is that he does not even attempt them to drop them. His batting? WTF kind of a hack is he masquerading as a batsman. His media pull has even persuaded the supposed cricket literates to nominate him in an all time Indian XI - the guy would not last 20 deliveries against Akram, Waqar, and Saqlain. But yeah, he gave the great photo op to the morons of the country in the WC final after Gambhir and Kohli had done all the hard work. OMG OMG, he hit a six to win the WC. It's not just this forum which has descended to mediocrity, it's the average Indian who worships mediocrity.

I think your going a little over the top here. Dhoni is a good wicketkeeper - by no means a great, natural keeper, but someone who has learned the art and practiced to soften his hands. He's a good natural athlete and takes most of his chances. He's had a tough test this time around, but in the last 2 years he's been outstanding, particularly stumpings off spinners.

To OP. IT'S A LONG STORY SHORT. India and Indians had been very disappointed after our shocking early exit of 2007 wc in Windies. It needed something special to bring smiles back and Indian team which won under Dhoni with Yuvi and Gambhir being the top players in the tournament, got plenty of credit. ALL OF A SUDDEn, in matter of 2-3 days, Yuvi and Dhoni had gained massive popularity and were seen in plenty of ads. People had new heroes to cheer for. Yes, who cares about twenty20 rite, but it was the biggest thign we had achieved in last decade I think. To turn the whole corner, they won straight finals in Australia and won the CWB series too. By then, Dhoni had become a big thing. IT'S THE WAY IT IS. Tomorrow if Fernando Verdasco, another spanish tennis player win a grandslam and Nadal loses in first round. Whole of Spain will go crazy and will have Verdasco on bill boards. What's harm in that???

It is like dismissing the leadership of any one of Border, Taylor or Waugh just because the other two were just as successful.
