The role of the coach is overstated and especially in cricket. These players are professionals and there are 11 heads in the team, most of whom have played the maximum matches in cricket history and have a wealth of experience. Can't blame Duncan...

pinkfreud Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 I personally don't have a good feeling about Fletcher, but it'd still be unfair to pin the blame entirely on him as of now. What you said about the field placements- Dhoni has pretty much sucked on that front for a long time now, even when Gary Kirsten was our coach. It's alarming to see this was the same Dhoni who had suffocated the Aussies with his 8-1 setting back in '08. Dhoni seems to have morphed into a completely batsman as well, which is a terrible sign. Our loss has everything to do with pathetic performances on all fronts rather than poor coaching alone, but I feel things would've been better for us if Kirsten was around. I don't know what it is, but his mere presence had a positive impact on our guys.

Our players are good enough to know when to attack and when to defend. Blame the players first then go after the coach. After all the coach can do so much coaching, it's upto the players to perform on the field.

Of course the players are first and foremost to blame but the entire team didnt wake up one day and decide they were going to suck. Coaching plays a huge part. The team has lost its aura since the departure of Kirsten. Why when England were batting the hell out of India were there no changes at tea/lunch etc? Does Fletcher not have a plan B, C or D? Pathetic display of coaching on his part. I'm hoping Warne will get a chance next year. He's a huge star and will know how to handle the glitterati on team India. Fletcher is clearly out of his element and it will be interesting to see how he handles cricket mad India calling for his head at the end of the series.
NareshK Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Dont blame the coach. The players didnt have proper preparation and they didnt apply themselves and perform under pressure. Also the over reliance on Zaheer and Bhajji over the years cost us. The batting could have performed better if they had good preparation and had got used to the English conditions. The team didnt look like a close knit unit and they didnt seem to have the hunger to win the series like we have seen before. They seemed very relaxed on the first few days of the first test. You cant just pick up things as you go along and raise the bar when the other side is already on the go from ball one. Also you cant expect the coach to make any impact, whether positive or negative on the team in such a short time. Its only his second series. The first being against West Indies which was not really much of a contest.

Our players are playing badly, and its mighty convenient to search for scapegoats and unfortunately Fletcher is the easiest one currently. The issues in the two matches was about our batting - we are yet to cross 300 even once in the four innings. Lets stop advocating knee jerk reactions in a sensitive transition phase of the team.

I think coach plays a major role in guiding the team. He can't perform for the team on the ground, but he can certainly help the players. Captains do lead the team on the field, but these days you can't work out strategies on the spot. Player can lose track of happenings while playing. At that time coach can point out specific areas where they can improve. However at the end it's upto players to do their work.

Ramzz Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Can't blame fletcher...maybe can blame the bowling coach since he has been around for a while and our bowlers have shown little improvement under him. Dhoni's defensive captaincy cost us the game in England's first innings. He didn't need to push fielders back for broad after couple of boundaries. Need to keep attacking when we have them down on the mat.

saneindian Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 With Kirsten in charge in his first two series, we lost a test to SA with a 76 all out at Ahmedabad, lost it by an innings and then lost a test in Sri Lanka by an innings again and went onto lose the series 2-1... Early days for Fletcher as a coach. Easy to blame him for the mess.
ensd2 Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Our batsmen can't play short deluveries , can't play swinging deliveries...its not Duncan's fault and the bowlers are as usual ordinary without KHAN guy like Raina , Yuvraj , Mukund , MSD are over rated .( all FTB ) Look at Yuvraj , after 40 test match he has only 2 fifty outside subcontinent...
