Well-said, yoda. It is often the case that immigrants (and I can speak mainly about those from India and China) cannot integrate - for whatever reason.

He should've settled somewhere in the middle (Middle East) .. he can have all the Chinese Vegetable soup & not have to see or hear about the laborers committing suicide a few miles away.

Beneath the fake smiles, expensive suits, shiny corporate offices and polite greetings in the US, there lies a very dark and dubious core that is powered by greed, ego and lust for power. This is a country that has made an industry out of the death of 3000 people in a terrorist attack, built phony monuments for them and converted that place into a tourist site. If that doesnt offend you, I wonder how anyone can be offended by dodgy sardar-ji joke. The US is by far the most morally bankrupt society I have ever seen (and I have seen only 2, to be honest). I have never been so disillusioned with humanity and human-kind ever in my life, like I am today. I'll tell you another instance of how I think pretty much everything is fake here Remember the day after Steve Jobs died and every boss of pretty much every corporate company came on T.V, paying glowing tributes to him. I couldnt help but think "What the eff are these guys doing on TV, giving him glowing accolades? I am pretty sure they absolutely HATED Jobs and probably even secretly celebrating his passing.. "And the next day, I come across news that Jobs had declared that his stated intent was to DESTROY Google's Android system.. ' You really think Eric Schmidt meant what he said about Jobs on TV the previous day? I agree - Our country is so screwed up, its not even funny. But there's genuine goodness there, not like the made-up, phony goodness of US of A. ++.. But India is catching up fast on that front too. In fact the fake-ness/flimsy-ness part has always been there in every society, forever since humans first tasted the 'power'. The very definition of being powerful/rich is based on feeding on others' lives - the more the better, and I don't see how you can be powerful/rich w/o 'tricking' those you rule. Spot on. One of my ex Korean boss once quoted (can't remember the context) - When in Rome be like Roman. And this is one of the few quotes that I found are most important for 'inner peace/stability' in life. If you are not comfortable being a 'Roman', or keep expecting non-roman stuff, then it is time to move to some other 'Rome'.

If we back our views of American society/humanity based on a few wall-street/corporate types, we can't be more wrong. If you compare yourselves with the people in the street/working class people in the suburbs, they are not very much different than us, being civil, caring for families, community etc. That's what the OP was used to for 11 years and couldn't get that in India in the community he settled down in. Anywhere, we need a support system - friends, family, without that you get lost in seeking what you want.

Reading articles and blogs trying to get all philosophical about pizzas, maids, cars have started to make we feel nauseous. I haven't seen people from any other country make such a big deal about this immigration and settling here and there business as Indians.
