saneindian Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 The failure of our batsmen in this series prompted me to have a look at some batitng numbers in the last 12 months and I was not surprised with some of the numbers I found. Sachin is the only batsman with a 50+ average. Between themselves Sehwag, Gambhir, VVS, Raina and MSD have scored just a single test 100. Gambhir hasn't hit a test century since Jan 2010, VVS hasn't hit one since the SL tour, Sehwag hit one against NZ, Raina has scored none after his debut 100, MSD's last 100 was in Feb 2010. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;orderby=batting_average;spanmax1=14+Aug+2011;spanmin1=14+Aug+2010;spanval1=span;team=6;template=results;type=batting The team has scored 500+ only once, 400+ 6 out of the 27 innings we have played in this duration. Some of the frequest top order collapses (not including those in this series)have been - 122/7 against the Aussies at Mohali - 65/6 vs NZ at Ahmedabad - 71/6 vs SA at centurion - 85/6 and 166/6 vs WI at Kingston - 167/6 vs WI at Bridgetown Has the batting started to lose its aura? Did we overlook those batting failures when we were winning? The key question is what does it take to stop these frequent collapses and get the batting back to the days when they could put 500 on the baord almost regularly?

Karan114 Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Just three hundreds between Gambhir, Dhoni and Raina since January 2010 is startlingly bad, as is just one 500+ score in the last 12 months. I think the point about the batting failures getting overlooked as we kept on winning is true. The fact that we kept collapsing against the NZ trundlers and needed Bhajji to bail us out with those two hundreds should have been a warning sign.

Last 1 and half years, his average is only 35 over 24 innings and that includes a hundred against Bangladesh. These are poor figures after his brilliant run in 2008 and 2009. It is not a short period of time either. Sehwag has also struggled in the 3 big series (Aus, SA and Eng) but he has been excellent since his comeback in 2008. Having them back in form is crucial in Australia.

India's batting woes have been going on for a while now. Individuals like Dravid, Laxman, Sehwag, Gambhir and SRT have covered up the overall failures at different times however it has been a long long time since they have all clicked together in a series. We all know that if they click at the same time it is lights out for the oppositions but that hasn't happened in a long time. Yes this team is finished, they won't recover from this slump. Time to move on and rebuild.

Other than that most of the batsmen have performed in patches.

I agree, the seniors need to be phased out honorably, but not all at once.
fineleg Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Batting needs to click collectively for the 500-600 scores. That has not happened too often. It has been one or two batsmen who have been in form and then they bat with the tail (Harbhajan or Mishra et.al) to put up a decent score. Somehow - with the bowling attack - we have been doing well in last 2 years. Even though before a series, there was worry about how our bowlers can take 20 wickets (with or without ZK) - they achieved it and took 20 wickets. I think our bowlers over-achieved beyond their expectations to take India to #1 and keep us there. But that is no longer the case now.

When sunny left how many years did it take us to find an opener like him? Great players can't be replaced. We have to start rebuilding a team with the best we got and along the way we will find geniuses again. If we go out looking for genius replacements, our cricket will be in the same shape as the Pakiz who are still looking for a replacement to Imran.

But teams win without Dravid and Tendulkar, we might have to do the same.

India has handed some frightful beatings to England in both India and England in the last 20 years but we haven't behaved the way you have been on here over the last 3 weeks. Gunner, when I started posting on here I was told all sorts of rubbish about how bad England were and how we were going to get thrashed. Since then I have at each test match had to put up with all the excuses and cr*p thrown at England. You guys on here are totally India India and give anyone else a really rough time. If you want my honest opinion, I think India have been incredibly unproffessional and have let themselves down. They are far better than these results show, but it is their own fault, like the 5-0 thrashing in Aus was our fault. India have been humiliated and quite frankly they deserved it

Why are Eng so crap in ODIs and have continously been a joke in every WC? What aura of crapness do they portray then? What kind of aura is shown when you steal players from other countries cause your own domestic talent is non-existent?
