Forgot short ball,WTF happened to Raina against the spinner,I thought he was one our best players against spin before this series facepalm.gif

I have always said this. I don't mind if a player jumps, hops, or take the short balls on his chest, helmet without playing any stroke. But the moment he fears it, I don't like that player. When short ball goes deep into his mind and he consistently goes on backfoot and misses even full deliveries then that player has problems. Look at Raina's batting. Because of those short balls, he doesn't go on the front-foot and his eyes are not on the top of the ball on normal deliveries. Ganguly couldn't play short balls very well. We often saw him taking those deliveries on his chest. But after short balls, if bowlers give him a fuller delivery outside off-stump, then there was more chances of ball going to boundary than Ganguly not getting on front-foot. Any Indian batsman who can't play spin is even more disappointing.

Raina was never one of the best players of spin , always found it funny when people called him that ....its not just about scoring runs , which Raina is capable of scoring runs against them ..but great players pick the spinearly , have great footwork ... GG , VVS and Virat are the best I have seen . Shewag is super effective , but again he dosent exactly pick them as well as say VVS or GG do .

Shewag is super effective , but again he dosent exactly pick them as well as say VVS or GG do .[/quote'] I disagree,he has played many spinners with ease although mostly in ODI'S ,but he has never been bogged down or looked out of place against any quality spinner like Ajmal,Murali,Randiv(in tests as well),Mendis,Vettori etc.Also I feel he uses his feet against spinners well,only shot missing from his armory is a sweep shot. Thats why his dismissals against Swann were a bit surprising.

Disagree. Pls don't confuse lack of technique with lack of mental strength and heart. His performances in odis and especially in WC against Aus and Pak showed he is mentally strong. It's just that he's not cut out to be a Test player at this point just like Bevan.

I posted about how Raina's attitude on the field was brilliant even at 6:30 pm when everyone was tired but if you don't have the balls to get behind the line, you have no place in a test team. Take a few blows on the body and fight it out. His hook shot at TB was totally gutless. He was embarrassing in SA as well. His batting in the WI ODIs was totally senseless. He needs to perform in the ODIs to keep his place. Otherwise he will have to stick to playing meaningless circus league matches for the rest of the career. I hope he does well in the ODIs (no more tests for a while I hope) because there is a lot to like about him. As for the comparison with Steve Waugh, I'm lost for words.

He is a world class limited overs player and has proven that over the years and no one can doubt that. In tests he will never make it because he is mentally weak and can't hack it. Players with a lot worse technique than Raina have been more successful because they can guts it out.
