What a horrid thrashing we have had. But let me tell you one thing. We are not as bad is it seems and definitley England are not as good as they seem. First England aint all that. They are the best test team in the world I agree at the moment. But this is no empire starting ala Windies and Aussie empires. They will get their **** handed back to them on occassions in next 2 years. We can certainly get back at them. This series was horrific but does not reflect the genuine 2 abilities of the sides. India had the worst prepartion possible, I mean for gods sake we had a gruelling year cultimating in the world cup win, then 4 days later IPL started, the physicall and mental drain was enormous, our scheduling was a joke, it meant we arrived tired, mentally not up for it and lambs to the slaughter. Meanwhile England had physical and mantal preparation at A1 level, they arrived for day 1 with peak preperation physiaclly and mantally. We were also ravaged by injuries meaning some of our best players who won us scores of matches did not play, this meant england played an understrength India. Not only that but our top players often got injured in middle of matches meaning in at least 3 out of the 4 matches we played with 10 men only re ZK, Bhaji and Gambhir. Not in 1 test could we unleash a fully fit and firing Sehwag/Gambhir the best opening pair in world cricket, along with our best bowler ZK. England did not beat the No 1 test team, they beat a team with key players missing who get them there to No 1. We got no luck in this series at all. Despite the above I still believe Eland would have won the series and are the best test team. However, they are not that much better then us, as the results were massivley distorted by the above. We will kill them next time they come to India. England away record is average and they could be labbeled as home bullys with their tailored tracks for seam/swing. England have a lot to prove! We were number 1 for over 2 years, they will need to do similar to be as good as our No 1 team and show they are not some flash in the pan team. Clealry now we need to look to the future and reclaiming the No1 test spot. Its not all bad as we are still world champs and will remain so for 4 years no matter how bad we become:--D. We also have great players who have some good years still in them, Sachin for one aint going no were. But clearly young players are going to come in like Kohli, Rohit and co. The key for our knee jerk fans is to stay patient with the young talents. They will fail at times in next 18 months but thats fine as you need to learn about failure to succedd. Do not write them of after a bad match or series, they will learn from playing and improve. Kohli was dissapointing for example in windies but I still firmly beileve he is a future test great, he will improve massivley from that and have learnt bucket loads. All our present legends had big periods of failure and fingers pointing out them saying throw them out they are no good. But they fought back and bulit on their failures, identify the class and back them. ZK was dumped out of team for being rubbisah and having stinking attitude, look at him now, arguably Indias greatest ever pacer. Gambhir was dumped as well for a year or so with again resident experts saying not good enough, came back to be ranked No 1 test batter. Point is stay patient with Rohit, Kohli, Ishant(who is delivering now anyway) and co. Even a Mukund has experience and some success, he may well come back to be a great player. Look at England team who being hailed as superstars. Loads of their players went through horror patches and dumped with fingers pointing at them saying not good enough. Remember Bell the sherminator, Strauss was 1 match from the axe, Cook got destroyed in 1st tour of OZ, KP only this year was close to axe,Prior could not catch a cold a few years back and was hailed as worst glove work ever(now england pundits saying maybe best eng keeper ever and best in world now), Swann attitude problem and dumped from england team for years. Broad was pathetic up until this year, now look. Point is we need to stay patient with our young talents as it they need a long rope to deliver. Mark my words we will be back as NO 1 test team within 2 years. We have unbelivable young talent coming through, easily best in world(despite idiots like Atherton and co who know nothing about indian cricket saying we have nothing after the legends). Its not all doom and gloom, we will be back to bring glory and pride back. Watch out England, this aint over, its only just beggining!

Taking no 1 shouldn't be main issue. Team should focus on improvement and winning as many matches as possible (avoid any WI type results). Rankings are by-product of the performances.

I think you are being a bit too optimistic there but i agree with you on the point that India need to stick with the young players that are coming through but knowing the BCCI they probably will start chopping and changing the moment a young player has a bad series. One thing India need more than anything else to become number 1 is to improve their fitness especially the bowlers because you cant have players breaking down 4 days into a game, they need to be able to last the full 5 days. The selectors need to stop going back the same old failures and trundlers.

England board woke up after decade or so of mediocrity that County Cricket Dished out. They gave Fletcher full power to make necessary changes. One of the big change he made was to reduce number of games they played. He was architect of central contract, so England players were more England player than County players. I wonder how many years of mediocrity it will take BCCI to do anything about making changes of managing our players well.

Do you guys even realize when our number 3, number 4 and number5 are gone..our batting quality goes 50% down even if we have likes of Pujaras, Kohlis, Rohits etc...it will take them couple of years to get going.. Unless we don't get high qualty spinners, pacers we will struggle a lot.

3 years back or may be 4 years back I thought we would survive and play well even without our big guns like SRT, Dravid, Laxman and Ganguly, reason was few bowlers coming in the fray.. likes of Ishant, SS, RP Singh, Pathan (briefly), Munaf etc. all of them looked great, raised my hope. But all of them have disappointed. I am hoping Ishant carries us forward and we discard SS for good. Look for other hard working bowlers and give them a go.

We had two good spinners in our line-up - Kumble and Harbhajan. Team somehow managed with available pacers to win matches. Now as usual we don't have pacers. But we have lost spin department also, which is a huge setback.
