speed_demon Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 MANCHESTER: Hit hard by injuries woes in the disastrous tour of England so far, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Tuesday conceded that the players were overworked as he called for a rotation policy to give them rest. India lost six regular players Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ishant Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan due to injuries in the four-match Test series which India lost 0-4 and Dhoni hinted that the hectic schedule had exhausted the players. "We will have to rotate. It's important that players get rest. Raina has been participating in all formats. It's more to do with the mental rather than the physical aspect. Good rest helps you keep the injuries away," Dhoni said ahead of the Twenty20 international against England on Wednesday. Dhoni himself has been on the road for a long time and his fingers are battered, causing a fall in his usually high standards of wicket keeping, as was pointed out by former Leicestershire keeper Paul Nixon recently. "If majority of your 10 fingers are overworked then it becomes difficult (to keep) in these conditions. But I have more problem with Ishant than with Sreesanth or Praveen Kumar. May be it's the wobble in these conditions which make it difficult," said the Indian captain. Dhoni revealed that Rahul Dravid would be making his debut in Twenty20 internationals on Wednesday but Sachin Tendulkar is not playing. It means young Ajinkya Rahane would get his first game in India cap on Wednesday. Gautam Gambhir is surely out of Wednesday's match but Dhoni did not sound too confident that left-hander would be available at all in the forthcoming ODI series. "It's a big loss. He has done really well not only as an opener but also when he batted at number three when Sehwag and Tendulkar were opening the innings. He also plays spin very well," said Dhoni. Gambhir, who is suffering from a blurred vision, an injury he picked up after falling on his head in the Oval Test on August 19, is likely to miss the entire ODI series, starting in Chester-le-Street on Saturday. The World Cup winning Indian captain was intrigued by England's policy of having separate captains for all three formats of the game. "It's interesting how it shapes out. It's important that the captain is a regular in all three formats of the game. One thing sure though is it affords rest," Dhoni said. Dhoni, a keen footballer himself and a Manchester United fan, took time off in Leicester to watch his favourite team thrash Arsenal 8-2 last Sunday. "Being a Manchester United fan, it was fantastic to see them win so big. Since I started as a footballer, it was interesting (to watch the match). As for inspiration, we don't need it from outside. There is enough inspiration within the dressing room. We don't need to look outside," insisted Dhoni.

Number Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 @CT yeah ...but may be according to him that's not a good rest. Dravid has played same no. of games , but he is about to retire from ODIs so its okay if he can help our middle order in the absence of Yuvraj and retires on a good note.

Though it appeared at first, I dont think It was a gesture by BCCI to let him retire gracefully. They selected him because they didnt have anyone else to go to. The ignored him when the team was playing in more comfortable conditions for batting/ Dravid rather than raising a hoopla about it, simply chose to retire.

Earlier players used to easily play over 80 days of international cricket per year and now we have 140 days of cricket in 2 years. 12 test matches and 20 ODIs or 10 tests and 30 ODIs was good combination for players 10 years ago and they used to get enough breaks with that. Now lesser number of matches have become burden? But what is hurting players - Champions League, IPL and other useless matches. It's not that Indians are playing some unbelievable number of international matches. In fact they don't play many tour games either. Problem is with those T20 matches. Basically you want some relaxation for playing IPL and other T20 matches which is not fair. IPL. If players want rest, simple skip IPL. If you care about test matches and ODIs then forget domestic T20 tournament.

If you care about test matches and ODIs then forget domestic T20 tournament. Vibhash, it is extremely easy to tell players to skip IPL if they want rest. However from a player's point of view - IPL is extremely lucrative given the short shelf life of most athletes and the hefty pay packets. It also keeps them honest as they are able to lead an affluent lifestyle in a legitimate manner. I think it its the BCCI which should reduce the meaningless international series (like Windies and Sri Lanka for e.g) and give players a breather. Tours should be arranged with the top ranked teams and well spaced. Each player should also have a maximum number of days of Test+ODI+T20+Domestic cricket he plays and he should not be allowed to exceed that. Also the compensation for tests should be increased compared to ODIs. This would motivate youngsters to build their skills more suited for Test matches rather than simply concentrating on the limited over format.

There are no batsmen other than him. Rahaane is a newbie and even if they play Rahaane, there Dravid will still bat at 3 and Dhoni 7 with 4 bowlers. Gambhir is injured and Tendlya does not play T20 internationals. So Dravid has to play though it will be a waste to play Dravid in T20. He played warmup T20 as T20 test with less than 100 SR.
