Australia used to push for victories a lot more than the great WI team did, but they also hung on for a lot more draws, usually due to appalling over rates, 7 or 8 overs an hour was disgusting back then.

Robelinda Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Whats interesting is how many test victories the mighty West Indies players have, not all that many compared to Ponting, even Viv who played for 17 years. and yes those over rates were appalling by the WI, they regularly only bowled 70 overs a day, 4 fast guys with extremely long run ups, with only Hooper in th elater years able to bowl some spin. Some very long days in the 80's waiting for an over to be bowled.

A lot less stuffing around with things, the bowlers just bowled, and got through the overs quicker, even 8 ball overs too. I've seen 17 or 18 overs quite regularly even when spinners weren't bowling, in the 60's and 70's. Not exactly secret info though, you can find reports from heaps of tests back then that mention the great over rates.

It really isn't rocket science, fast bowlers take much longer to bowl an over than a spinner. That's why you see spinners sometimes brought on if the skip wants an extra over or two before lunch or tea or whatever. When you've got four fast bowlers for the majority of the day, of course over rates drop
