Srinath was never considered as fearsome bowler .I still remember when the hype of Shoaib Akhtar was created Children who use to bowl fast always like to be called Shoaib akhtar .Giving bowler an Indian name was/is like a abuse. BTW have you seen Children's film Chillar party ? They have shown how children were nick named ,the one who use to bowl fast are called Akram,Akhtar
Its a pity that Srinath in his own country was not considered fearsome. Ask a South African cricket lover who watched Srinath bowl in SA and you will know how he was revered there ! And its no wonder that he was asked to take bowling coach of one of the top counties of SA after he retired. ..And Srinath was never considered an easy bowler to face, ask Slater, Lara, jayasuriya and the top batsmen of his time. Its just that we never give credit to our fast bowlers that he was never recognized. I remember watching WC 99 , the 1st pre match against SA where Graeme Pollock was commentating. When he saw Srinath being termed ' Right arm fast medium ' on the TV, he said - ' After watching Srinath bowl, certainly he is much much more than a 'fast-medium bowler. While the Indian commentators kept quite. Another match which comes to mind is 99 Pakistan series to India . Saeed Anwar was batting like a monster however Sri was the only bowler who troubled him consistently. To which Ramiz Raja commented -' Its never easy playing against the pace of Srinath and Waqar Younis . Somehow, the Indians miss out this aspect of Srinath.

Players that have to be in the squad and groomed are, Varun Aaron , Umesh Yadav, both have serious speed, nudging the clock from average 140's to 150's.Sudeep Tyagi having played decent amount of domestic and has some international experience should be persisted with owing to him being a tall bowler with a good wrist , high arm action, can bowl in mid 140's, can seam the ball , good seam, also can bowl long spells.Rahul Shukla, Shami Ahmed per reports having serious pace should be groomed along with , Pawan suyal , Prasanth Parmeswaram , Wagh for A tours also monitored closely for strength , skills, diet thru NCA.Irfan Pathan , Vrv Singh though not rookies but have the required skills and ingredients to succeed should be persisted and be ready to replace Zaheer as they have some experience and if fully fit and in form , can be good for India.

The problem with Srinath was him being used as a stock bowler by Tendulkar and due to that his injury , also despite being Fast in my books not bowling the right length, he looked very good when he bowled he beat the bat often but most times he never got ample results owing to not bowling right length for the wicket he played on , which he successfully did in the latter half of his career. He had all the requisites to be more successful, pace , bounce , seam , swing, stamina, not the most intelligent bowler in his youth also not having the right support structure in terms of bowling coach and no one to build pressure on the other end.If we look at the history of our cricket team and selection in general , we do pick up batsmen and spinners identifying and promoting young talent , but fast bowling it is not quite the same, examples , Paras Mhambrey , Iqbal Siddiqui, soo many bad choices, players that were not persisted with Salil ankola, Abhay Kurruvilla,Raju Kulkarni, Amit Bhandari , Prashant Vaidya, Atul Wasan, Sanjay Bangar couldve been a decent allrounder.

After the disastrous English tour one thing is clear that we need to develope a top class fast bowling pool of atleast 8-10 bowlers. For fast bowlers player growth' date='developement, proper break, fitness ,core strength improvement & diet these things are very important. One heartwarming thing is that we have some talented guys but all of them are not finished product yet.Though they can be developed into fantastic bowlers in 2-3 years time.[b']Ishant Sharma(age-23,pace-135-152kph)),Varun Aaron(age-21,pace-140-154kph),Umesh Yadav(age-23,pace-135-152kph),Sudeep Tyagi(age-24,pace-135-145kph),Abu Nechim Ahmed(age-22,pace-135-145kph),Rahul Shukla(age-21,pace-unknown but hyped as very fast),Pritam Das(age-22,pace-unknown but he's sharp),Pawan Suyal(age-21,pace-unknown but he's sharp) all are very young & quite pacy.Abhimanyu Mithun & Jaidev Unadkat are also two very young bowlers but needs lots of improvements to be near the national team reckoning.Deepak Chahar(age-19,swings the ball both ways but needs to improve his pace, has some batting talent),Srikanth Wagh(age-22,pace-130-140kph & he is an allronder, can bat),Bhuvaneswar Kumar(age-20,pace-120-130kph but he can hike his pace & can bat in the middle-order,bats at no.6 for UP) are some pace bowling all-rounders.There are also some unknown pacers who will be in action for 2011-12 domestic season like Abhisek Tamark(Jharkhand),Mehjoor Ali Sofi(J & K),Baltej Singh(Punjab).I've heard abt Rehan Khan from Bihar who is hyped as a 150kph bowler according to our friend RightArmfast. There is Ashok Dinda(age-27,pace-130-145kph) & Pankaj Singh(age-26,pace-125-140kph,he is the best performing FC pacer) in domestic circuit who has represented India but I'm not too convinced with them.So these are our fast bowling stocks and we need to develope them & select the best 5-6 among them if we aim to regain the no.1 spot in test cricket.
Good Article....I would like to truncate the list a little.... Varun Aroon- seems genuinely fast and capable to play international cricket. bowls possibly upto 150K. Umesh Yadav- Has Pace even upto 150K but he has a tendency to bowl short or bowl very full so he has a big problem of wrong length either too full or too short and if it is short .. he will be hit by international batsman- will He Suceed or not at international level depends on if he can improve on his length and has better control. Abu Nachim- Sachin rates him High and many Mumbai indians rate him high he was always preferred to the other mumbai Pacer ..he has to learn the skills to take wickets as well but this guy has pace- he bowls from 135K to 147k and bowls 140K + 4 times out of 6 balls, good part is his simple action and consistency in maintaining speed.LINE is a bit of an issue though length is normally good. IShant- every body know about him Sreesanth- is the one who should be further groomed and he wud sure improve , he needs to be given more confidence. Sudeep Tyagi- looks very promising , has good bounce like ishant and hence i consider him the one to be backed most strongly----i just cant beleive why did dhoni not play him more for CSK. Srekant wagh - slow left Arm- Not of international CLASS at least at present. Jaydev unadkat- slow at present and Hence i beleive he is not international class at present if he improves pace he can improve at present he is not better then RP Singh. Ashok DINDA- he has a good slow bowl...and maintains pace between 133k to 145k so he is pretty close to international class as he is very competetive and is aggressive. Deepak- is a junior PK.. not international class at present. Bhuvaneshwar- Sorry not international class....dont mistake to groom guys who r not that capable. is VRV good- yes he was international class at his peak- i dont know how good he is now. abhimanyu mithun- can improve further has good stamina but is slow for international class...not good enuf at present. dontknow about rahul shukla rehan etc..... vinay needs to improve pace. i feel guys who can be trusted are varun/umesh /ashok/abu nachim /Vinay Kumar

Tyagi has a very poor ftness record. Too many stress fractures early in his career. Unless he plays an entire season of domestic cricket, he will find it difficult to comeback to the national side. He does have the skills but needs to get stronger to play consostently for India.

Comes back to my earlier post in which I emphasised that to be a great fast bowler, its a prerequisite to have a decent bowling partner. When you are the strike bowler as well as the stock bowler for your team, how long can you survive and how long can you maintain your quality ? It was the absolute lack of bowling partner which negated Srinath's efforts always. The times Prasad bowled well with him, the results are there for everyone to see. I do believe Wassan could have been a really good bowler since he was one of the few who could hit 145 kph. However, the board did not support him. Same with Sanjay Bangar, he was a quality allrounder and yet he was only picked by the *** end of his career ! Lesson - We need atleast 2-3 pacy and quality bowlers in the team. Having just 1 150k bowler is not going to help since he will be burnt out sooner than later.

Yaar Pls don't mention Vinay Kumar the ultimate trundler & the dumbas* Sreesanth.Deepak,Wagh & Bhuvaneshwar may not have the extra pace but they can move the ball both ways & they can be quicker as they are very young right now.Plus all of them can bat & we need a genuine seam bowling allrounder.I agree with u on all other points though.

noticed that there is no mention of dhawal kulkarni, he had a very decent first ranji season, then fell by the wayside. he seemed quite nippy in the IPL. not sure whether he was sent for the emerging players tournament. but surely a lad who can be a handful if groomed properly

One of the main reason Srinath was never considered fearsome could be that India use to loose very much in 90s and most of the times bowling was the main reason so how could Indians believe that Srinath was fearsome ,may be lack of good bowling partner could had been reason. But the fact is We had the best ever fast bowler ,best ever spinner and best ever batsman in 20s playing for india yet we did not win a single tour outside. Also Dravid and Ganguly too made their debut in 90s and quickly became very good batsmen ,but still in 99 world cup we were badly thrashed .It is only in 2000s India learnt the art of winning but srinath was old at that time Paki bowlers got respect because they use to change the result of match quickly ,The shoaib Akhtarss 2 yorkers in series against India in 99 in which he clean bowled Dravid and tendulkar was the point he came into Limelight.

Boss, you are forgetting Srinath's 13 wicket haul in Kolkatta and the fact that Pakistani batsmen were literally pissing in the pants at the prospect of facing Srinath in the series. He reduced Pakistan to 20 / 5 or something if I remember it correctly. But the lack of bowling partner at the other end cost India dearly. Srinath was lethal for most part of the 90's but he had nobody to support him. Trust me, if he had Zaheer Khan bowling from the other end, it would have been deadlier than a deadly bowling attack !

some people underrate srinath but some people here are overrating him, he was never among the top fast bowlers of his time.... he cant be compared with the likes of waqar or donald or even akhtar the druggie

Who's comparing Srinath to Donald ? Where did you read that ? I think my posts clearly suggest that he was a good bowler, not a great bowler, in verbatum. Please go thru my post. Waqar was great till he had pace, after he lost it he was almost pedestrian. But Donald was great...Srinath was perhaps in the same class as Gillespie. Just a level lower than being great.

i didnt say it was u who compared him with donald. He was probably close to Gillsepie class even though gillespie stats look better but srinath didnt have a good bowling partner. But its unfair when some people say srinath was ordinary or not a good bowler

Srinath was just a step lower to being a great bowler, I would say. Towards the end of his career he finally understood the art of fast bowling and he was a mighty difficult bowler to face..If you remember it.
