punjabi_khota Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 What do you need it for ? If you are using it for official purposes, your employer should provide you with it. If you are a student, you have an option of buying student edition MS Office for $100.
akshayxyz Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Here are my issues, three things 1. I know about torrents but as someone stated already, office 2010 will update it self and block your key if you open applications while connected to the internet. If you turn off your internet and then open office, it won't update and you will be safe. This is not an option for me b/c most of the times I am researching and typing up papers at the same time. 2. Some torrents require you to download a foreign file that would ultimately crack the software forever but then I am scared of spyware. 3. Too expensive to buy it legit...if it was like 30 bucks i'd have bought it by now I couldn't come to a solution around it If you are skeptical - then get a fresh legit install of XP/win7 in a virtual machine, and install MSO in that virtual machine.. and monitor it for suspicious install/activity. Once sure, you can move it to your main machine. Or continue using MSO from that virtual machine - would be a bit inconvenient, but a lot safer.
akshayxyz Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 see what PK said - what do you need it for!!...for most typical use cases OO and google docs is more than enough. And for science/maths project reports/thesis etc., I guess Latex (or GUI editors of Latex) is still preferred tool.
ganeshran Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 We got Office 2007 for 500 bucks through an office scheme 2 years back. Maybe Office 2010 will have a similar scheme soon.. I will buy if it costs less than 1000

Jersey #10 Posted September 21, 2011 Author Posted September 21, 2011 school use! mostly type reports, take notes, power point presentations etc... my work computer won't let me log in at home...it only works at work on their wifi so that's out of the equation I'll look into Akshay's options first and then look into the student version if needed.

They sell their own "computers" ranging from 1000 bucks to 1800 bucks. Which comes with 3 or 4 years warranty and all the programs you will ever need for that many years It also goes by your department, if your department can afford it they'd allot you with a key for office. My department doesn't do that as far as I know. I will double check though.. I don't have any friends who live in dorms...:nervous:
