Coach Prabhakar hits out at his players, Delhi selectors Posted: Tue Nov 01 2011 New Delhi: Days before Delhi open their Ranji Trophy campaign against Haryana, chief coach Manoj Prabhakar vented his frustration about not being consulted when the team was picked and also said that officials of the Delhi and District Cricket Association had turned a deaf ear to his Ã…Ãew ideas? Delhi failed to reach the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy last season, Prabhakar's first year in charge of the team, and the coach predicted an equally bleak 2011-12 season. Prabhakar has found it next to impossible to convince the Delhi selectors to induct fresh blood, one of his grouses. I am not holding out much hope from the Delhi team this season, said Prabhakar while talking to The Indian Express after a training session at the Roshanara Club grounds. Ū won't accept any blame whatever the outcome of this season's campaign is because I was not even consulted when the team was named by the selection committee. Last year when I joined as coach, I thought I could build a new team with fresh faces. This season I tried to bring in new ideas and new thinking but most of them have been rejected, Prabhakar said. The immediate provocation for Prabhakar's outburst was his batsmen's unwillingness to play along the ground during the training session. They persisted with expansive strokes even when the coach asked them to adopt an orthodox approach. Amongst the first batsmen to draw his ire was Shikhar Dhawan, who showed up wearing his IPL team Deccan Chargers vest rather than the first-class whites. Prabhakar had insisted that all players report for training in whites. It wasn't Dhawan's IPL fixation alone that annoyed the coach. The opener is a key member of the squad, but is not putting a price on his wicket in spite of having the experience of 62 first-class games. Prabhakar believes, Dhawan carries a lackadaisical attitude to practice sessions and he fears that the 25-year-old is not pulling his weight. Å´hikhar is one of the senior-most batsman in the side but he doesn't looks like he wants to treasure his wicket. My biggest concern is that the batsmen don't seem to be willing to learn. They are not open to new suggestions and don't want to fine tune their game. Everyone wants to play his own game but that doesn't work in a team, the coach added. Baseball shots Prabhakar's mood hardly got any better when last season's first-class revelation and India U-19 skipper Unmukt Chand began practice by playing aggressively from the word go, often mis-hitting shots. Ū am worried about Unmukt. This season is going to be a big test for him. But he hasn't hit a single ball with a straight bat. Is he playing baseball? It is high time he realised that there is a big difference between U-19 and domestic cricket, said Prabhakar. If Prabhakar seemed exasperated with the way Unmukt batted he was livid when captain and the senior most member of the squad Mithun Manhas took the aerial route as well. Manhas challenged a seething Prabhakar to recall an instance when he had been dismissed while slogging during a first class match. Prabhakar's lack of faith was evident when he supervised the groundsmen as they shaved off grass on the Roshanara wicket. Ū wanted to play this game on a lively wicket but I am afraid that my batsmen will fail to cope with the moving ball, said Prabhakar. Delhi won't have the services of their first-choice seamers Pawan Suyal and Sumit Narwal who are injured, while off-spinner Mohit Chauhan is serving a ban after being found overage while playing U-19 cricket. Only when he watches medium-pacers Pradeep Sangwan and Parwinder Awana bowling in the nets does Prabhakar's face light up. Sangwan has found his swing but what really excites me is how Awana has improved over the last season. He has trained harder than most.

This is why there should be neutral curators for Ranji Trophy IMO.So that "ya our batsmen cant bat so prepare roads". attitude dont exist. Maybe if the likes of Dhawan know he wont get roads to boast his average he will take batting seriously rather than just slogging.

Even if they shave off all the grass till its last grain on the Roshan Ara wicket, it will continue to aid swing and seam movement. Easily one of the best tracks in the country. Will definitely catch a glimpse for an hour or two during the weekend when the Ranji matches are played there this season.

The Delhi and District Cricket Association gave him the marching orders after he made comments about some players and the selection committee in the press. "He made comments against players and selectors and it hasn't gone down well with them. It has created a rift in the team," said Delhi's chief selector Chetan Chauhan. The differences had been there for quite sometime. It is believed that Prabhakar's no-nonsense approach and his often sarcastic comments had irked the players. The differences between the coach and the team have been brewing for some time. In the recently-held T20 tournament, Prabhakar wasn't happy with skipper Mithun Manhas's decision to bat first. "The feeling among the players is that he should have spoken to the players instead of lambasting them in the press," said a source. Chauhan ruled out the possibility of reinstating Prabhakar in the near future. The DDCA hasn't named any replacement. Assistant coach Sanjeev Sharma will handle the team. Prabhakar was quoted as questioning the attitude and technique of some players. He said that the selectors didn't give him the players he wanted.

Not defending Mr.Prabhakar coz he seems to have clearly overreacted with his wards in front of the media, but there is a reason why he is the coach and the Delhi boys are players.

Good for players like Dhawan...now they can practice the whole Ranji season preparing themselves for IPL....& playing baseball type shots...so that ek ya do lag jaye IPL main theek se. Good job Delhi

Pretty sad state of affairs. I won't be surprised if this is the case in other states as well. It's just that this coach had the balls to say it to the batsmen that they are not learning anything new. These future superstars want to bat on easy pitches and not pitches on which the ball moves. Seriously, our domestic set-up is producing many more IPL/T20/ODI sloggers than proper batsmen. :((

You said it with the last line!! The problem is not with having issues within the team or with the coach. The problem is with this washing of dirty linen in the public. That's where strong and mature minds come in. Now picture this, instead of Dravid and SRT, had there been 2 persons who dished out there feelings in the press or media, it could have gone a lot worse.

How would we react if an Indian coach comes out in media and shames the player by openly naming them and questioning their commitment? If Prabhakar had any issues, he should have talked to the players rather than talking to the media. Though the DDCA by reacting in a hurry once again, has shown itself to be a highly irresponsible admin body.

Chetan Chouhan is a politician , DDCA is the worst run state association, there is a lot of nepotism in selections, Prabhakar I guesss wanted to change a few things and is kicked out,there are several other talented players not given a chance here , that was the problem.BCCI needs to get its house in order, state associations are a sad story, most people are in it for power and money.Viru and some other players had voiced their concerns last year too.
