panther Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 so what do you think the series result is going to be?
BeautifulGame Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Did you read what I wrote earlier in this thread' date='[b']Rankings dont matter in ODIs.Dont know why you brought ODIs into this.. I mentioned ODI rankings because u said winning series and rankings are inter linked and hence test rankings matter.Similarly winning series and rankings are interlinked in ODIs too.Does that matter ODI rankings matter too. No.1 ranking in test cricket shows which is the best test side in the world at that moment.Doesnt matter if that team ends up remaining at no.1 for 2 years or a decade. What exactly u achieve being No.1 in tests that is different to being no.1 in ODIs? They are as meaningless as one other. What exactly u gain by being No.1 ranked team based on rankings? Do u really cherish these we are no.1 in test cricket moments? Seriously do u rank the moment when we became no.1 after beating Sri Lanka in 3rd test rank anywhere close to the moments when we won the Adelaida test or Durban test or winning the world cup or CB series in Australia? Not many Indian fans will rank the moment we became no1 anywhere close to these wins.Because only winning matches and series matters not these pointless rankings.

Okay to make it clear once again: Zenith of ODI cricket : World Cup,not ICC rankings. Zenith of test cricket : No.1 test ranking. And It will remain that way until ICC starts with a ICC Test Championship format. And it was not as if we only won that series vs SL and earned no.1 spot.We played consistently for 2 years before that and after that till that English tour occured.Dont know about you but India being no.1 team in test cricket was big moment for me as a fan.

Dravid_TheWall Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Rankings are important. When Aus were dominant, they stayed top of ODI and test rankings for over a decade, which highlighted their superiority.

Agree with odi but not Tests. The zenith in Tests to have series wins against better teams (these days Eng, SA and Aus). I mean what would you prefer to be - team ranked no. 1 but without any wins against SA and Aus just like what SL nearly managed, or a team which may not be ranked no. 1 but has series wins against Aus & SA.
kirkutfan Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Realistically, I would put India at 4. Eng, Aus and SA are ahead. Better bowling and fielding sides. India historically had strong batting to overcome its disadvantage in the other 2 areas. But that edge is diminished today, as the big guns are nowhere near what they were at their peak, say 2004- and the new guys have yet to establish themselves. In fact, India would have had their hands full in this series vs WI if WI politics had not come into play. A WI side with Gayle and Dwayne Bravo in the mix with this current side would have given India a lot tougher time, even at home on home spun wickets.

SA hasn't beaten any team even at home and they are ahead of India? As for Aus they were thrashed 2-0 in their last 2 series against India, so how come they are better? Eng may have a point and we will know for sure once they tour India next year but as far as SA and Aus are concerned, they are not better than India at all.
jairamesh Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 effortless stuff from the Indian team, that's what you call stealth attack.
Serani Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 lets hope india dont threaten to cancel the tour if they lose a few games in aus this time.
Cricket_2_Death Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 lets hope india dont threaten to cancel the tour if they lose a few games in aus this time. AUS no longer have anyone on their team to pull the race card drama again, so this should be a great series.

But in my view one should only look at the past for analytical purposes- not for prediction. As mentioned earlier, my basis for ranking India below Aus/SA is that both teams are stronger bowling and fielding sides than India. India's bowling is in major transition mode. For India to prevail it would have to offset that by having an overwhelmingly stronger batting line up. When VS, RD, SRT, and VVS were at peak form, we satisfied that condition. I don't think that is the case today. Today, our stalwarts are still good- but not that good. And the new guard e.g. Kohli, Raina, Rohit etc. are not good enough- yet- to fill in the void. England showed us that. I think it will take us a couple of years before we have a seasoned line up (both batting, bowling) that would put the hurt on Eng, SA or Aus sides in all conditions. By then the fielding could be better too since the side would be a younger one consisting of more scrappy fielders. Today, however, India @ 4 in tests is a reasonable guesstimate.
ravishingravi Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Why does it always have to be either/or? People come up with this stupid thing every time. I woudl rather take an Indian win over Sachin 100. I would rather India win than they score over 400, etc, etc. Who gave the choice? We will take both gladly Does India's chances to win in Aus go down if they become no 1 or something? Except that it is not stupid. It certainly doesn't go up. If India's tour of England proved anything, it was that India's No.1 ranking had every right to be disputed and the 4-0 bashing like club side, every right to be discarded. Stupid thing is people still take this ranking thing so seriously.

But considering your past history it iis meaningless to expect a reasonable argument from you. Good luck trolling.

How are AU/SA teams "stronger" in bowling when i) SA has struggled to win a series against decent oponents in nearly 3 years, and ii) ditto for Aus. How exactly is performance over the last 2-3 years "going back historically"??? If you can't even look back at the last series between two teams held around 1-2 years back then how exactly can you compare them? I don't see any rason why either Aus/SA should be rated even equal to India, forget being ranked higher.
