He has done well in the ODIs he has played and Kohli had similar issues of not being able to score at a very fast clip when he started out. It takes time for cricketers to develop and given our domestic structure they are not going to develop beyond a point there. Rahane should be given a good run in ODIs to start off with and see if he can add on to his game like Kohli did or stagnate like Rohit has. Same with Pujara. It's too premature to pigeonhole them as tests only cricketers.

It's too premature to pigeonhole them as tests only cricketers. I am not "writing him off" neither am I stereotyping him - I just have doubts and valid reasons. His current stint in the Challenger Trophy gives me no confidence either. I would not prefer Rahane to play in the lower order for ODIs and therefore he must open or come one down. For that to happen, two players among Tendulkar-Gambhir-Sehwag have to be dropped. Take your pick. :--D
saneindian Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Our next ODI and T20 series is with Pakistan. Don't see the BCCI taking any risks at all by dropping any of the big names - Sehwag, Gambhir etc from that series given the money at stake. Yuvraj will comeback to the ODI side too.

Number Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 After Pakistan's tour in England ODI series we can try a few players like Rahane, Dhawan, Pujara and Saha. We have always done well against England at home so no point playing so many seniors there. And I think next year champions trophy in England should be the point from where we should start building the side for 2015 world cup. Sehwag, Zak and Sachin shouldn't be in the scheme of things from there on.

So even our fringe players are beginning to act like stars who care 2 hoots about their fitness and have no hunger to get into the national team. The selection panel changed just now and players like Uthappa should have been top of their game and eager to prove to the new panel that they deserve to be in the team.
