IMO aggresive batting aint meant for him. Overdoing something what you aint good at eventually proved him wrong, although its very much required to survive in LOIs and IPL. I think he will be back though, as India dont need any attacking opener anymore, but a technically sound conservative cool headed performer is much prefered. I think he being over confident in shot selections most of the time falls him in mediocre standard atm. He was needed this break to find his composer.

Now that Gambhir's lost his spot, irrespective of how he does in the India A match vs Aus, he should not be recalled. Needs some time away from the national side to work on the technical flaws. With a few A tours coming up ( NZ and WI at home, SA away) could even be asked to lead those sides

Around 30 is the best time in a batsman's career. Make no mistake, once Gambhir solves his problems, he is of prime importance for the team.

GG did very well in SA and NZ last time we toured (our next two away tours are SA and NZ) and with Sehwag in decline, it's a must for us to have a Gauti back in good form. SO don't think his test career is over.

If sources are to be believed, the idea is to give Gambhir some break so that he could regain some confidence. "He is a quality player but his form is a concern for the team. There's too much focus on his form. Although he is getting starts, he is unable to convert them into big scores. He also looks a bit short on confidence. Question for anyone who would like to share their opinion. Recently I've heard lots of commentary, theories etc "India should play five specialist bowlers" "Yuvraj should be dropped for Raina" "Yusaf is being wasted play Raina instead" etc. I've never heard anyone talk about dropping Ghambhir for either a fifth specalist bowler or to bring on Raina. For the last year I have not been impressed with Ghambhir at all. His technique is great but as a #3 I'd expect much more from him. I know a major reason they play him is cause he is a lefty but so is Raina as well. Id suggest moving Kholi to #3 since he is India's most reliable anchor and slotting Raina who can part time bowl and is a much better fielder at 6. All Ghambhir really brings to India is batting and that being said his strike rate is usually mediocre when it really matters. He has to go to county cricket and play a season there. That's the only way he can rectify the technical flaws which have crept into this batting. Indian pitches are way too flat and first class bowlers are not attacking enough to test him. Kohli, Pujara, Rahane, Raina would also be well advised to play overseas domestic competition for a year or two than Ranji.
