i dunno man i think we are at a CROSSROADS here. the disgruntled genereation of ppl that watch cricket for tendulkar and tendulkar alone, will redirect their lust elsewhere, possibly towards figures in other sports or other fields like engineering and marine biology.

Trust me things will change. Cricket is bigger than any player in India. The next series after SRT retires people will be following it. The next world cup post SRT people will still be following India's fortunes in the tourney and celebrating India's success or mourning its failure. Remember T20 2007 without SRT, Ganguly, Dravid etc. and with a bunch of newbies and the whole country, nay Indians all over the world, went crazy. After Tendulkar there will be Kohli, Rahane, Rohit, Pujara or someone we haven't even heard of. Maybe we will unearth the next greatest fast bowler in Umesh and Aaron's footsteps and people will follow them. Tendulkar or no Tendulkar cricket's future is more than safe in India.

Fans creates heroes.When Sachin retires i am there will be someone else who will occupy the stardom in his place.Just like Sachin become the hero of the nation after Gavaskar retires.

No ... Iam not saying that but for a lot of people cricket = Tendulkar. And there is plenty of good reason for that. It will be damn hard to find a substitute. Plus there is this thing called tontee-tontee that is fast changing the meaning of cricket

As I mentioned there must be folks before Tendulkar who must have thought the same way about Gavaskar or Kapil or Vishwanath but life goes on. I can bet that the series after SRT retires will be business as usual for cricket fans.

Reinforces my point. If people didn't stop following cricket post Gavaskar why would they now? Time doesn't stop for anyone and life goes on - SRT or no SRT. We will always remember him and recall with pleasure what he meant to the team but at the same time we will continue following Team India.

Trust me similar things were said when MJ retired from Basketball. But nothing has changed. People especially the new generation always connects with the present and will get on with it. No matter what the sport is no one individual be it Ruth, Bradman, Pele, Ali, MJ, Gretzky, SRT is above the game.

Actually I agree with BB that 20-20 is not really cricket(cannot believe a guy with Yusuf Pathan's cricket talent is a star there - kind of Arena league football to NFL analogy between real cricket(Test) to 20-20) but I watch it as I got on with it LOL.

There are a few people I know who have watched cricket from the 70s and still say they will not follow cricket closely once Buddha retires. Many people stopped following cricket closely once Gavva left but within a few years they found a reason to come back to cricket. These people are as knowledgeable as you and I when it comes to the game. They are no less a cricket fan than you or me. I think it is all bullshit that people say the game is not about individuals. What attracts every kid to a game is an individual. A game cannot survive without brilliant individuals. And when a brilliant individual leaves then you will find some people leave with him (only to come back when some other brilliant individual makes a mark). Sachin is a phenomenon that has never happened to India. I don't know if there is any other sportsman in the country ever to have captured the imagination of the nation and brought the nation together as much as Sachin has. People have grown up along side his career and relate very strongly with him. So obviously some people will stop watching cricket once he retires. It dunn mean they are any less of a cricket fan than you or me.

I seriously doubt if anyone will stop watching a sport because a player retired - May be a dwindled interest for a while but a true fan will always come back. Basing it of course on my personal experiences.
