Future of indian cricket after Tendulkar retires

judging by how the guy singlehandedly draws the crowds into the stadium and after witnessing the overreaction to his failures and successes, does anyone think that cricket will lose a massive portion of its audience once he is gone? think about it. if tendulkar wasnt playing today, or yesterday, we would have had about 6 people in the crowd (3 of them being the peanuts and lassi-waala and chowkidaars). this is deeply worrying and it brings up the question; are indian people fans of cricket (and the indian cricket team), or simply fans of individual cricketers? PS; this doesnt just apply to tendulkar. dravid and laxman are also iconic figures of indian cricket and they can draw public interest too (albeit not anywhere close to the magnnitude that tendulkar does).

I think test cricket for sure, will see less and less crowd. None of the new generation bats, apart from Kohli are good, attractive test players. With players like Sachin, years of loyalty bring excitement. With the new generation, even if they score in tests, it will be like, so whats new, our trio has doen this before So yes, tests will suffer

even the ODIs were SPARSELY attended. i would put that down to the absence of tendulkar, along with other high profile indian cricketers. do you think this gives credence to the theory that indians love CRICKETERS and NOT CRICKET. i think it does the obsession with tendulkar and everything tendulkar does (and in this case, DOESNT. LOL) isnt really helping india in any way

dont kid yourself,a lot of people watch cricket because of Tendulkar, just look at the crowd cheering for an Indian Wicket!!!!!.I think its good we will lose these "fans" after sachin retires because they dont care our team.

They are fans of their heroes, not cricket. It is like Salman Khan movies where audience comes to see him, not his film. They do not care if there is anything in the film or not, nowadays.

Tendulkar is the reason, why I started watching cricket ,but I won't stop watching it after he retires .Unless we slump to some new low .

phirst of all, thanks to all the mods for capitalising the words in my thread title. this truly makes me appear more literate and does wonders for my confidence

They do not care if there is anything in the film or not, nowadays.[/quote'] this makes sense. indian ppl will watch a movie because shaaruk khan is acting in it. they dont care about the movie itself, their only focus is on sharuk and his lame acting skillz, fake laugh and ridiculously unrealistic mannerisms. its quite sad to see cricket becoming like this.

Nothing will change and things will go on as usual post SRT. Before Tendulkar people would have said the same about Gavaskar and Kapil and before them about Vishwanath and our spin quartrets. Post SRT we got Dhoni and we will get someone else. As long as Team India is around people will follow the team and the sport.

Yep, he is another batsman who makes tests interesting. But apart from him and Kohli, who else will you watch if the big three retire?

i dunno man i think we are at a CROSSROADS here. the disgruntled genereation of ppl that watch cricket for tendulkar and tendulkar alone, will redirect their lust elsewhere, possibly towards figures in other sports or other fields like engineering and marine biology.
