Actually those days direct hits were more common than these days. Even our best of the best in current crop suck at throwing at the stumps. Allan Border, Kapil , Ricahrds were very good at that.

Kapil should have been the MOM in both semis and finals of 1985 Benson Hedges. He was hard done by and for some reason it went to the wrong contenders. Kapil effectively pushed down Pakistan 3/30 or something like that in 15 or so overs and they never came out of that. His yorker to Qasim Omar was talked by Richie Benaud as the ball of tournament. That it came against Qasim Omar who was perhaps Pakistan's best batsman in the tournament helped India greatly.

Not sure if on an average their were more direct throws but Border, Kapil and Richards were pretty darn good in this. Dean Jones and Logie were awesome too. A moment for Kapil here :--D He was the most complete fielder India has ever produced. Could man any territory and could throw a rocket throw from the boundary, very safe pair of hands and excellent runner between wickets. He was never run out in Test which may be a record that might never be broken. xxx
