Will Rahul Dravid continue to man the first slips position?

If he does, It could be one of the biggest risk factors for us in the Aussie series. Hate to say this about the most prolific slip catcher in the history of the game, but its come to a point where the probability of Dravid hanging onto balls that come his way is has come to down to 50-50 these days. And that is only for the regulation ones. For those with even a semblance of difficulty, it is almost a certainty that he is not going to pouch it. The thing with his slip catching that has been rather alarming is that, even for the ones that he actually manages to hold on, it does not look smooth or under control. His feet are not in position (he seems to be going into this weird knee-on-ground position) and he is grabbing at the ball. With VVS, Sehwag, Virat and Sachin in the side, I would definitely have these 4 man the slip and gully cordon as the first choice.

ya i agree he occasionally catches some tough ones but from wht i remeb he drops atleast 1-2 in each series :P he needs to give up that position..maybe its age or like u said technique who knows but he has really been dropping many easy ones

Just by the sheer number of catches i think he would continue to be there. But i must say it is quite alarming the number of regulation catches that he has dropped of late, i am not sure if it is his reflexes that has slowed down because he seems to be picking the ball late. It would be a disaster if he drops Punter early on and then Punter goes on to score a century. That would be the worst of it all! Hopefully he will do better than what he did in the England series because i just dont see MS Dhoni replacing Rahul from the slips.

Anywhere but the slips.. Mid-on.. Square - leg.. Anywhere.. I'd rather see him slip one between the legs for four than drop one of the aussie openers on session 1 of day 1 of a test match.

this is my pet peeve,the penchant of modern day captains to leave third man open only to see countless runs scored over there before reluctantly putting somebody over there.I really hope we have somebody at third man from from ball one.

There was a brief period in 2007-08 when SRT had started fielding at 1st slip. And he did pretty well. I remember in the Oz series he had dropped only 1 catch of Irfan at Perth. Apart from that he took a few outstanding catches specially at Sydney. If his fingers permit, then he can stand in place of RD, who off late has been dropping a few.

Have seen Ashwin field in the slips in domestic cricket. Looks to have safe hands and good reflexes. Is he an option for the slip cordon or is that too risky? Swann fields in the slips, so why not Ashwin? Sehwag, VVS and Ashwin/Kohli looks like a decent cordon to me.

At least 15-20 catches missed in the last 12-18 months clearly point to a decline in standards. He still pulls off some stunning efforts, but has lacked consistency. Let me see if I can complie a list of the chances dropped by RD.

But this man has taken 200 catches, I am sure he will be prepared for the Aussie pitches with quick hands.
