Having presided over a disastrous 4-0 Test series humbling in England - his former employer - in the English summer, Fletcher now faces the prospect of another unfulfilled tour of Australia, a land that has not been kind to him. Teams coached by the former Zimbabwe captain have won only one of 11 Tests in Australia, and lost 10. ''He has had a tough time. It's his fifth loss in his past five overseas Tests, so he will be under a bit of pressure,'' former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly said yesterday. ''He has to turn it around.'' Just how that can be done remains the burning question, with whispers yesterday that several Indian players had made it known they were unhappy with the defensive field placings that allowed Australian tailenders James Pattinson and Ben Hilfenhaus to post a crucial 43-run stand on Thursday. If Fletcher's history is any guide, he faces an enormous challenge to help India regroup. As England coach, his 2002-03 touring party was mauled 4-1, with the Ashes conceded in only 11 playing days. The lone victory was in the dead rubber at the SCG. He had Ashes success in England in 2005, famously irritating Ricky Ponting from the players' balcony at Trent Bridge, but landing on Antipodean shores a year later sparked another nightmare visit, this time a 5-0 drubbing that brought into question his man-management skills. Fletcher was given full power when he assumed control of England, with the team at the depths of despair in 1999, but those powers have not been granted by the Indian board. His predecessor with the Indian team, South Africa's Gary Kirsten, was given freedom and all the tools he needed to succeed, but those close to the team say Fletcher has been kept on a tight leash. Fletcher has yet to speak publicly on this tour, for he dislikes the media. His autobiography was appropriately named Beneath the Shades. Some Indian batsmen privately say he is very good technically, echoing comments of their English and South African counterparts. Fletcher was a batting consultant to Arthur, then South African coach, on the Proteas' breakthrough Australian tour of 2008-09. But he is not regarded as one of the boys, something the younger Kirsten was able to do well in toughening the team's attitude and leading it to the No. 1 Test ranking and to World Cup victory this year. Kirsten was able to win extra favour with the players through his commitment to delivering throw-downs in the nets, a training technique that Sachin Tendulkar credited for his superb 2010 form. Tendulkar has brought his own throw-down expert on this Australian tour, a man named Raghu, to help him predominantly work on combating the outswing of Australia's pacemen. The batting maestro prefers throw-downs because they can be delivered at a consistently fast pace. Fletcher's immediate challenge, heading into next week's second Test at the SCG, is to find a way of combating Australia's plucky tailend batsmen while helping his top-order deal with the pace and swing of James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus. That looms as a major challenge for the likes of Virender Sehwag, V. V. S. Laxman and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who do not like to move their feet. Something is seriously wrong with the team's approach, attitude and fortunes... since this guy has come aboard...or may be just a pure panauti. even if he did not bring down, I don't see any value he has added.. unless of course someone wants to credit him from bringing Yadav, the only positive thing to happen in last 6 months (Ashwin was expected).

ALL THESE THINGS WERE GOING ON when kirsten was coach. the coach's role is overrated anyway, the captain is the guy who runs the show. this isn't football, it's cricket. if anyone should be fired after this series, it should be dhoni.

I am saying I do not see the value he is adding to the team, at least it is not obvious. personally, as a sports person, I would not feel motivated to be coached around from a baggage of fat, in matters of athleticism, skills... and I do not think he has any oratory skills either... or extraordinary track record as a player, or as a coach. This team and the captain turn completely defensive once things start going against them. You cannot defeat Australia by being defensive.
