akshayxyz Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Strictly speaking in terms of test cricket Spinners Ganguly had Kumble best Indian spinner ever and Bhajji that could bring the invincible Australia to its knees. Dhoni has - Noob in Ashwin and washed up Bhajji Openers Ganguly - Multan Sehwag Dhoni - Double Duck Sehwag Middle order Ganguly - Dravid and Laxman in their peak Dhoni - Dravid and Laxman at the end of their career SRT Factor Ganguly - Double Hundred in Australia sachin Dhoni - cant get hundred in almost a year sachin Etc etc... If a captain is just as good as the individuals in the team, then I think I can captain sitting at my laptop and even dhoni can also focus on his performance.
BeautifulGame Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Dada had his worst year as a captain after the highs of the 1-1 draw in Australia and historical series win in Pakistan in Mar-Apr 2004. Loss in the Asia Cup, Lost to Aus and Pak in a tri series, lost a ODI series to Eng, First round exit in CT in Eng, home series loss to Aus, 1-1 draw vs Pak and a ODI series loss to Pak. It was said at that time that the Ganguly-Wright combo had failed to take India to the next level after the highs of Australia 2003-04 and Pakistan 2004. Team India MSD is having a similar slide post our WC win. There seems to be a lack of motivation in the team and skipper, attributes quite similar to what we saw fin the last 12 months under Dada. Maybe 3-4 years is the max shelf life of an Indian skipper. This. Both had been great for.But after a period India has stagnated in test cricket under Dhoni just like it happened under Ganguly.Maybe its time to look past Dhoni as captain in test cricket. But that doesnt change he was a great captain for India just like Ganguly was despite his faults.
Pagalpanti Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Dhoni - World T20, 50 over World cup, No.1 ranking in tests. Ganguly - none of the above. Enough said.

Whatever may be the reason, I think its time for Dhoni to go as captain of the Test side. It may help to have different captains for Tests and Limited overs and who knows, without the pressure of captaincy Dhoni may become a better keeper and batsman in Tests.
saneindian Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Had Sehwag or gauti been in good form in tests, MSD might well have lost his test captaincy after the Eng tour. But both of the have been going through a lean patch and their batting on the Eng and Aus tour hasn't helped their case much either. Selectors would be loath to appoint someone a skipper when his own form is not upto the mark. It's that TINA factor which may help MSD keep his job a little longer than deserved.
Singham Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Dada is easily the best captain we had. He always backed the right talent for indian team. Especially pace bowlers.
Singham Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 This thread made me chuckle. Back when Dhoni knew how to win, his impassive demeanour won over a lot of fans. Earned him the sobriquet, captain cool. His impassivity was read as being in control of emotions, bringing a sense of calm etc. Now it's a sign of his cluelessness and even lack of interest. It's not his style of captaincy that has changed, it's the results. This team's problems lie elsewhere and while it is okay to point out a tactical error made by Dhoni, it's a folly to say his general style of captaincy is behind all that's wrong. Dhoni believes all the abroad tours are just to improve as a cricketer so that he can play better in home conditions because we play 80% cricket at home. Absolutely opposite mindset to Dada. I am kinda starting to hate this attitude and Dhoni.
Viki_J Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Both Ganguly & M are unique when it comes to captaincy...Dada was more agressive..Dhoni is a bit laid back & calm kinda guy' date=' but have to admit..Ganguly captianed the team to many wins :hatsoff: and M maintained that :two_thumbs_up: recent slump happened.... lets hope we get back to the winning ways :winky:[/quote'] hey nice1...but i still feel Dhoni is better:hmmm:
Needforspeed Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 It is not Dhoni's facial expression we are talking about ...its his general attitude. He simply let things drift. How many times how you seen him go up to a bowler and talk to him when he is getting hammered?

Crookbond Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Liking/disliking styles of captaincy is a personal choice. Sourav Ganguly was India's "one of the" greatest captains and so will MS Dhoni due to sheer results. At end-of-the-day results do matter. One may give various statistics but there's one statistic about India's ODI record at home under Ganguly's captaincy - We won just 1 ODI series at home (excluding Zimbabwe, Bangladesh for obvious reasons) against South Africa in 2000-01 (first series as captain) under Ganguly. This doesn't belittle his achievement just as it doesn't belittle MS Dhoni's achievement of winning a couple of WC's and holding the No.1 Test ranking position for close to 2 years.
CSK Fan Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 how can Kirsten is better placed to make call..he may be biased as he worked mainly with Dhoni... And why only Tendulkar why Not Kumble,Dravid or Laxman...do u really think they cant judge better...atleast 2 of them are better captains than Sachin :winky: How do you do that?
adi B Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Ganguly had a much much better test team under his captaincy than Dhoni ever did. Not much for Dhoni to do as all the players on the current team are well past their prime or noobs. :omg: :whack::facepalm::ohmy: and finally no
adi B Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 well for me ganguly is a far better test captain than msd
CG Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Not sure how Dhoni's "general attitude" (whatever the **** that means) has changed from when he used to win. Anyone? If running up to bowlers and being animated is what captaincy is about then Dilshan should trump them all. Imbeciles. Yeah he hasn't changed ,But what as changed is his mindset when he started he had a habbit of taking risks andcame up with good ideas like 8-1 field,But now he just lets the game roll .
adi B Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 you dummy under ganguly- we won the 1st test in eng after 20 years won the 1st test in WI after 24 years won a test in aus after decades and drew 1-1 vs the great aus side of steve waugh won a test and a test series in pakistan first time ever! reached WC finals playing in SA and more.. ganguly made india tigers both home n away and now dhobi is taking us back to the 90s again. +1 :agree:
Number Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 I agree ganguly was a better captain. But constant Dhoni bashing on ICF is plain pointless.
maniac Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Do you mean Dhoni is a good test WK/batsman' date= but people here talks about he is a poor test batsman so how it has helped Dhoni him being a poor test batsman, especially overseas. Ganguly had inform Kumble and Harbjahan as well and Kumble has been very successful in Australia especially in 2003-2004. I would definetely take Dhoni over some of the Keepers that played under Ganguly but obviously that is not saying much.... The very fact that Harbhajan made his way into the team while we still had Kumble speaks volumes of Ganguly's talent initiative. In a perfect world Harbhajan would have taken over the mantle from Kumble which obviously did not happen but if Dhoni would have been in his place...going by how his captaincy turned so far,it would have been Kumble till he just burnt out....Look what happened with Harbhajan....Now we are stuck with 2 inexperienced spinners. How many Spinners have been groomed under Dhoni in tests???
Sidhoni Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Dhoni - World T20, 50 over World cup, No.1 ranking in tests. Ganguly - none of the above. Enough said. This.
Sid Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Sorry but the man you think is better than him, thinks otherwise : Dhoni greatest ever India skipper, says Ganguly Mumbai: Sourav Ganguly, India's most winning captain, hailed Mahendra Singh Dhoni as "the greatest ever" to lead the Indian cricket team on Sunday. "There can't be any doubt about it. Dhoni is the greatest captain of our country. His record is proof of that," Ganguly told MiD DAY. "Under Dhoni, India have won the T20 World Cup and the (ODI) Asia Cup. Under his leadership, India have become the No 1 ranked side in Test cricket. And now, we have won the World Cup. Obviously, he is the greatest ever captain to lead India." Ganguly, who led India to the final in the 2003 World Cup, said he knew that Dhoni's men would triumph. "When they beat Australia (in the quarter final) I knew India would win the World Cup. A lot of people thought Sri Lanka would win, but I was confident," he said. The Prince of Kolkata praised Dhoni's match-winning knock of 91 not out in the final. "According to me, Dhoni played his best innings in the final. He played a perfect captain's innings," Ganguly said. Ganguly was impressed by Gautam Gambhir's knock of 97 as well. "Gambhir played brilliantly. First, he ensured there was no further fall of wicket, then he smoothly accelerated the innings. I liked the way he batted," he said. Now suck on it and move on Thnks.
